Natural disasters
In geography, natural disasters can strike at any time. This is because no scientific measure can help avoid these disasters. Once they occur, the cause great damage to the environment. Since there is no measure to take so as to stop a natural disaster from happening, we need to understand the causes and any precautions that can help us avoid confrontation with a natural calamity.
In California, Los Angeles and Long beach, one of the most remembered natural calamities id the 1933 earthquake which hit the area causing a great damage to property and heavy losses in life. Though people were not accepting the fact that buildings can be caused to resonate at a harmonic of the earthquake, it occurred causing heavy damage. The magnitude was about 6.3 on the richer scale.
Looking deeper into the main cause of the earthquake, it is believed that it was due to a crush resulting from tectonic movements which led to the collision of the Pacific oceanic plate and the North American plate. This resulted in imbalance near the coast of Long Beach and caused the earthquake.
As if that was not enough, Long Beach and California in general is much prone to extreme weather conditions. As an example, in the year 2010, a tornado hit the coast of California mainly the long beach causing destruction of property. This was not even the first tornado to hit the city but it is an indicator that on beach is placed in a zone prone to natural disasters. This is contributed mainly by its location near tectonic boundaries, area within the mid tropics and an area near Pacific Ocean.
As a result, the state leadership of California came up with natural hazards mitigation procedure which aims at helping and saving as many people as possible when such a calamity strikes. It has also trained some of its security personnel on how to help in an event of the calamity occurrence.
