Application of Evidence-Based Practice in Workplace by Nurses
Application of Evidence-Based Practice in Workplace by Nurses
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing practice refers to the interdisciplinary approach whereby nurses and other healthcare professionals are supposed to make practical decisions basing their evidence on research studies done. The research studies should be competitively selected and interpreted according to the laid down norms for the EBP. In this regard, the healthcare practitioners will be able to make the best decisions due to the best evidences from the researches concerning the environments, the needs, the preferences and the values of those that are going to be affected by them (Drisko, 2012; Nurse.com News, 2012).
Generally, nurses are struggling to implement the evidence-based practice. However, the majority of nursing professionals and healthcare facility managers/owners have embraced the EBP, despite some barriers. A third of nursing staffs have been applying the EBP’s scientific investigation procedures to determine the right decisions from various researches. Moreover, there are research teams at the facility, which are multidisciplinary to ensure that nurses collaborate with other professionals across departments. Gladly, some members have received awards in their peer review researches on autism (Nurse.com News, 2012).
Although the majority of nurses and institutional owners/ managers have acknowledged the importance of EBP, they are meeting some barriers. In this regard, professionals with low level of education have tended to be less confident in applying the EBP. Apart from education as a barrier, young nurses fear stepping on “toes” of their heads by such proposition. It has also been observed that older professionals tend to be less motivated in learning about the EBP. Nurses have stated that even though they wanted to implement the evidence-based practice, their managers have been resistant to switch to the EBP. In this respect, they do not provide educational resources and tools that are essential for the implementation. Some clinics do not implement it because they would like to have freedom in their own practices. Therefore, the whole healthcare sector needs an overhaul whereby those involved will continuously be taught about utilizing informatics, applying quality improvement, employing EBP, working in interdisciplinary team and providing patient centered care. The continuous training process that updates everybody should involve nurses and their employers so that everybody appreciates the safest and highest quality healthcare (Stevens, 2013).
