Human growth and development is the book written by Thompson R.A in the year 1970.Human growth and development is the study of human beings from conception to death. This book tries to combine the fundamental concepts and principles of physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional, moral and even personality development in each major stage of life such as stage before birth also called prenatal stage, infancy stage, childhood stage, adolescent stage, adulthood and even old age stage of life. Berger (1998).
This book attempts to explain and gives the instrumental roots to the learners, in psychology, nursing, education social science, home economics, workers in the community service and parents. The book is also intended to help the learners to understand their own behaviours, gives more explanation to the behaviour of others and even teaches them on how to enhance good and mutual relationship with those around them, the book contains the various theories, facts and concepts which are more connected to human growth and development.
Theories of human growth and development are collections of related sentiments, laws and even principles which describe, define and even predict some distinct aspects of human growth and development. The main theory which explains the human growth and development are psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud which states that development is directed by their unfolding of the individual genetic makeup. The second theory is the homosocial theory which explicitly elaborates that human beings pass through eight major conflicts in their development. The other common theories of human growth and development are Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, behavioural theory by skinner, social learning theory and even information processing theory. Brodizinsky and Ambron (1986).
Therefore human growth and development tries to equip both the learners and professors with the knowledge of the various stages human beings undergo since the conception and death.
