Introduction
Shaping people life is something of great importance, and I generally tend to think it is of my great passion. I remember one evening when our class teacher asked the class of what we love to take as carrier, no one in class mentioned guiding and counseling except me. To me carrier is arrived at when passion meets a character. I had passion for helping and guiding other young men as the fate of the world we live to day cannot be determined objectively. I have been observing people escalating the wrong way at the watch of the public, which seemed to be less concern about the deteriorating future of the world. The misled young students having no focus and behaving as if the future is already determined for cannot be under estimated. This has been the driving motive of pursuing guiding and counseling my carrier of choice.
Counseling is service offered to an individual or individuals are undergoing specific known or unknown confrontations making them to ask for professional guide on how to overcome the problems. Problems are always disturbing human beings mind, as no one is ever stable when he or she is in troubles especially psychological problems. Counseling therefore is a more of a specialized professional service requiring intensify training in personality capacity building and in handling the minor groups in the society (Parsons, 2009 p. 21).
The process involves two individuals one in need guidance or general help and the other a professional ready to give directives on achievement of the confronting goal or objective.Counseling services directed to persons having general and specific development confrontations and difficulties. The disable and challenge person for instance the mentally handicap suffer in areas of emotional and mental stress both hereditary factors and environmental factors and thus calling for a professionals help (Chisholm, 2012 P. 12).In the wider population, counseling services are for only about 5-7% in a population thus only a small number of people require counseling. As compared to the other field of the profession which is directed to 4% of the population. Counseling calls for a lot of time in probing the client to put the problem forward, as for a counselor he or she requires an insight in to the complex problem in definition.
Counseling techniques involve active listening and clear understanding, which leads to the unruffled of the hidden feelings confronting the client therefore need to employ such a skills effectively. The guidance and counseling of students, is known to be an integral constituent of the educational goals achieving the schools mission. Guidance and counseling services and programs have contributed in promoting personal and social, educational and career choice development of all students in the education fraternity and should take into consideration the calling sake of effective guiding and counseling (Shane, 2011 P. 28).
Depending on the environment, different issues face various people, therefore in school setting there are various diverse problems that confront students. Guiding and counseling professionals need to establish specific clear ways of handling the various students related problems that is, from their guardian or parents issues and the entire student body without forgetting the other colleagues in the profession (Gibson, 2010 P. 212).
In order to work with and establish a good approach to students’ specific issues the professionalism in guiding and counseling requires that information about the background of the client needs to be know and for students whose life is gets complex day by day. Guidance and counseling is required to help the students for maximum achievement and appropriate change in the dynamic life situations. The current need inquiry of the students in the schools indicates that guidance and counseling services are required in the education profession, social, vocation, marital, personal, and health areas. It is a worthy enough to understand that guidance is a function of education.
There is a strong tendency among the schooling people to differ in to considerable situations of interest groups supervisors, principals, class attendants teachers and counselors all having organizations and conditions to which they show considerable self interest. The role of parents and guardians play a primary role in the lives of the students. Partnership with parents in the high demand of students is a great concern of school counselors. The objectives of school counseling are on the personality, social, educational, and career development of the students while ensuring parents get appropriate and accurate information in a caring manner as part of working with minors in a school environment. The open sharing of guidance educational activities with parents is differently in identification from the confidentiality of a counseling relationship with the client. Working hand in hand with students while keeping parents appropriately informed without compromising confidentiality is of importance as it expresses utmost responsibility. School based counselors ensure effective communication with parents at every insight (Shane, 2011 P. 52).
Guidance and counseling provisions are part of a wider community delivery system established on the ground of success to the students’ body. The school counselor requires to maintains and up hold credibility while relating and interacting with other school staff, including physicians, and other service providers who collaborate with students in the school. No one is the possessor of all the knowledge and thus consultations are highly recommendable when things seem to be tough. This also is a way of building a mutual relationship with colleagues and professionals in the subject matter (Granberg, 2005 P. 198). Professional knowledge sharing amongst colleagues is in consideration for the sake of students’ success and well-being. The coordination of ideas between professionals should always be to the interest of the student. Confidentiality of the shared ideas and information about the client in this case the student should stay within the rules of the engagement. Every professional’s actions should comply with the school rules and regulations.
In order to meet the comprehensive general goals of guiding and counseling school counselor should develop an effective program with the school team to meet the needs of their context and specific school community. This process involve defining needs and concerns, implementing follow up programs to ensure consistency with the objectives, as well as correcting plans based on the developmental requirements of students. Regular examination of the plan and its implementation are important to ensure the school and fraternity is service is objectively achieved (Chisholm, 2012 P. 115).
However, the school counselor's first concern is the students. These includes the general concerns on academic, personality, social and more importantly career needs of all students around the schooling environment, at all school diverse levels. The counselor considers these concerns as he or she strives to achieve and establish effective guiding and counseling program.
The diversity of students specific needs may call for specific counseling expertise and therefore the school counselors has to recognize their barriers and levels of competencies by providing up to their reach of knowledge and expertise. When students need intensive specialized and long-term counseling above what the school may reasonably provide, then appropriate referrals measures appropriation and determination is usually in consideration. The reasonable environment that can provide and facilitate such dream of career is worthy while considering.
As passion defines success of every individual, the passion for guiding and counseling of the people around is blind to money gain as it is worthy while considering humanity than material things. However, The Labor Department reports that school advocates made an average compensation of $54,130 a year ago. The best paid made practically $90,000 while the most reduced paid 10 percent earned about $32,130 yearly. The most noteworthy winning instructors ordinarily work in basic and optional schools, in spite of the fact that some pick school guiding. The top earners exist in the metropolitan territories of El Centro and Madera, Calif., and the Nassau, N.Y., metro range. This is a standard good pay that any individual with such a qualification can be paid, having in mind the general blessing attribute with helping those who are confronted by challenges to reach their specific goals that could have been otherwise undermined and rendered them unrealistic (Gibson, 2010 P. 234).
It is therefore, easily pursuable to guide and counsel in schools. It all depends on passion and working within the rules of engagement between the client and the professional. Humanity is more considerable than the challenging situation of the profession. Guiding and counseling is a wider profession widely divided into two, guiding itself as an area of specialization and counseling as another.
