Bone soaked in vinegar
Observation on Bending
The notable observation when the bone was bent: It just bends easily. Upon application of pressure on the soaked bone on vinegar, the bone bent easily since the vinegar had eliminated the calcium content which is responsible for the toughness and or hardness of the bone.
Baked Bone
Observation on Bending
On bending the bone after baking, it was inflexible, hard as compared to the one soaked in vinegar. An underlying reason is that water that initially was present was drained by the heat during the baking process. On smashing the bone it broke easily into pieces.
Questions
what material is responsible for hardness of bone?
The fact that on baking the water was drained, thereby making the bone to be harder, in this case the collagen was altered during the baking process thus making it to be hard.
What material accounts for flexibility of bone?
The flexibility of bone is attributed to organic materials from the matrix. On soaking in vinegar, the calcium was dissolved this caused the bone to be left with only water filled cartilage thus increasing flexibility of the bone during the experiment session.
Conclusion
Which bone would resemble the bones of a child with rickets?
The bone inserted in the vinegar would resemble the bone of a child with cricket, since vinegar being acidic in nature will drain the calcium thus making the bones to be softer just like for a child suffering from cricket. Cricket normally occur as a result of insufficient calcium content in the child’s body and since absence of calcium is also witnessed only in vinegar soaked bone, it is therefore right to say that the soaked bone resembles the bones of a child with cricket
Questions
How does spongy bone differ from compact bone? What differences did you see in the appearance of the spongy bone and compact bone"?? What color was the spongy bone"??
Compact bone is denser and harder while the spongy bone is porous just like their names suggests. Whereas the compact bone is found at the edge the spongy bone is found at the middle of the bone. The spongy bone is reddish in color as noted in the experiment carried out in this section.
How does cartilage differ from bone? How did each one feel when pierced with the knife?
In terms of function, bones protect the body against mechanical damage while cartilage’s function is to aid the friction deduction around the tracheal. Typically bones are hard when felt upon piercing with a knife and normally form the skeletal structure whereas cartilage is less hard and less rigid as compared to the bones when felt upon being pierced with a knife. So in terms of texture cartilage is a bit soft compared to bones.
How, did the periosteum and endosteum differ in thickness?
Both the periosteum and the endosteum are thin in terms of thickness however the endosteum is less thick than periosteum.
Was the bone marrow yellow, red, green or blue?
The bone marrow was red for raw bone however for baked bones it appeared brown in color. This specifically has been outlined in the experiment.
What type of cartilage makes up the articular cartilage?
The cartilage that makes up the articular cartilage is Fibers
How did the articular cartilage differ in appearance from the spongy bone?
The bone does not have distinguishable cells while spongy cartilage has. The spongy bones are surrounded by / with periosteum.
What color was the tendon"? What substance gives it strength?
The tendon is white in color and generally connects muscles to bones within the any structure of living organisms.
It is offered strength by the glucosamine which is normally found in abundance both in cartilage and the tendon. This glucosamine any break down of the tendon and such away assist in the rebuilding of the tendon. Tendon just like cartilage is white in colour as evidenced during dissection.
How did the raw bone differ in appearance from the baked bone in the other experiment?
Upon the examination of both raw bone and baked bone the major difference was noticed in terms of texture. To be specific the difference between the raw bone and the baked bones is that a baked bone appears more brittle as compared to raw bone. Any raw bone is strong as compared to baked one since the baked one can easily break.
