The concept of rethinking work has been widely discussed in the video. Various key issues have been highlighted such as the adoption of technological methods in our work areas and lives to increase efficiency in the outcome. The aspect of rethinking will also add value to the entire society. Competition has become so vital in the society today that people forget about the final value. There is the need to create a difference between us and competition as well. In the essay, we will be looking at the most important aspects that have been discussed in the video of “Rethinking work” and try to point out the main lessons learned as well as find the possible solutions to some of the problems identified. .
The first idea presented is how to succeed in the various fields of work. This will entail reviewing the way we work and conduct an evaluation of the value of work for our characters. Most people tend to look at the paycheck that they will be receiving at the end of the month or within the duration of working in the workplace. Pay is significant, but it should not be the primary force driving people to work. Instead, we should look beyond and assess the nature of the jobs we are doing. We should look at the achievement we get from work. For most people, work occupies a very great part of their lives including the emotional aspect. The big test here is whether there is enough labor for people to enable them to look at it in another way rather than just the paycheck they will be expecting. Work should stimulate the same sense of loyalty among the staff just like in the case with Wall Street. Having a culture where everyone is focused on their output in labor is more of what is being experienced in the world today. There is also the aspect of having a free-agent nation. People are striving to create their meaning in various ways through the work they perform. This has led to the creation of competition, especially in the urban environments. The solution to this can be to undertake specialization in the various work categories that will further encourage the aspect of invention and innovation. However, there is also a significant number of people who have been left behind due to the various types of change that have replicated what humans were doing. This calls for action to be taken to absorb the people who have been locked out of job opportunities due to the presence of innovation. Due to these shifts, there is the need to change the way skills and knowledge are instilled in people (Rethinking work 1).
There is also a question of whether there is the existence of a community that is not focused on work. The focusing on work is referred to as loyalty, but the companies where the people put most of their effort in do not show the same loyalty towards them. This has also created the concept of these workers not being independent. The organizations should establish a form of flexibility for the workers to be free and this will enhance the productivity as well (Rethinking work 1).
In the urban areas, there is stiff competition in the workplaces. However, there is the range of knowledge and value that moves people forward. In this case, it’s not a matter of how much knowledge you have but it’s who you know in the upper ladders of work, and this has also extended to being about who knows you. In such a case where one may not know where to start to be recognized, conducting personal branding and social networking are vital. This will help people to target the most influential connections that might further open new chances for them. The creation of a professional form of branding will surely get us where we want to get. Being active in technology and social networking will give one a broad audience that they can utilize to get new opportunities. The use of technology to connect with humanity is the key thing in this case (Rethinking work 1).
Businesses are usually faced with critical problems that they may not know where to start finding solutions. The manpower available may not also be effective enough to them. In such a case, the solution is to conduct crowd sourcing. This entails spreading the net wider to find more people to help solve problems rather than making use of only the internal manpower or benefits. In the culture of today, people tend to look for experts to help come up with solutions to their most severe problems. However, little did they know that groups of people can be significantly intelligent and come up with powerful and efficient solutions. The ability to magnify the knowledge of a group of individuals and to combine it will create good answers for business in need rather than just trying to find it from one person. There is the issue of who is the greatest beneficiary of crowd sourcing. Involving a large group of individuals in the process of crowd sourcing can help to get the solutions, get more products in the market and do it at a cost that is effective. It is, therefore, significant that organizations engage in open innovation to involve the external and internal stakeholders in the entire process. Following this process will enable the organization to get better economics and better solutions that will solve the problems. Those who help the business to find solutions will, later on, want to be involved in the entire community. However, it is also significant for an organization to watch out for the limitations that crowd sourcing create. These are tension and conflict. If this problem is evidenced, then an organization should make use of the game theory model. This entails involving people to suggest solutions and working together to come up with a common path (Rethinking work 1).
The aspect of technology is once again reviewed and in this case, we will look at how it is used to get people to work. The use of rail systems is seen to be fast, and it is being adopted in most cities in the world. The adoption of trains is seen to be a fast way of moving people from city to city all the way to work rather than them getting stuck in traffic for long hours. Being in traffic for long further takes up the time that would be used at work hence reducing the output. This might also explain why the economies of countries that have adopted the train system have their economies thriving. It is simply a matter of using the available technology. In the US, this system has not been fully adopted hence the lack of national network like what is in Europe. The existence of a high-speed rail in the US will benefit everyone since it will also be cost effective. It will further increase connectivity and expand the opportunities that are available to workers. It will also enhance the quality of life in the urban areas. It is significant to note that the transport system in any country is very vital in determining the success of its economy in all aspects. This is because the presence of a carriage system will increase connectivity and networking among people (Rethinking work 1).
The way we prepare people to be absorbed in the workplaces also helps to determine the level of success that will be attained in the various sectors of the economy. It is important that we support teachers as they strive to prepare the workforce of the country. There should be the incorporation of various forms of technology when it comes to equipping skills and knowledge in learners just like what is being evidenced in the police department. The levels of technology are advanced such that it is easy to catch a robber by just identifying one aspect that they had in them. There should be a huge investment in technology to prepare the various levels of a workforce that may be, for instance, doctors and bankers to achieve efficiency in the output (Rethinking work 1).
