RFID stands for Radio-frequency identification (“What is RFID?” par. 1). It is a technology that uses electromagnetic fields to identify and track the tags that are attached to the objects. RFID technology can be extremely useful in managing memorabilia inventory at Hard Rock Café. It can allow the café to track their inventory without human intervention that makes it the ideal technology in the environments where reading of barcodes could be difficult. Since the Hard Rock café has the huge amount of memorabilia inventory, they can take assistance from RFID technology that eliminates the need for labor-intensive tag reading or direct line of sight since RFID does not need to be scanned.
Secondly, by reducing the human intervention, RFID technology can assist the Hard Rock Café in minimizing labor cost associated asset and inventory management. Moreover, by streamlining inventory and asset management processes with the help of RFID, the café can enhance their customer services and can increase the speed and accuracy of mobilizing their memorabilia inventory.
Advantages and Disadvantage of RFID
The primary benefit of RFID technology is that it can scan a tag from within the frequency range and does not need any line of sight like barcodes. It also has the capability to scan multiple goods simultaneously. For instance, a complete box of goods can be scanned without individually running the scans on each item. Secondly, RFID scans the tags with high speed unlike optical scanning that requires manual operations and work less efficiently (“Advantages of RFID Versus Barcodes” par. 2-3). Speedy service of RFID can be highly beneficial in services like cashless payments. For instance, many public venues allow the visitors to load cash into RFID Cards or bands that can then be tapped for payment. Hence, visitors are saved from waiting in long queues or from carrying wallets.
The main disadvantage of RFID system is its high cost that demotivates businesses from using it. Moreover, the technical problems also often arise in RFID technology in scanning through water and metal. Finally, security issues are also the major concern with RFID. Data on RFID can be scanned and changed by using unauthorized devices.
