With a wide range of changes in the climate system already observed and many still projected in future, the effects of global warming are causing long term negative impacts on lives of individuals and the existence of the society. This is what the artist in the polar bear climate change advert is seeking to communicate. Adverse effects such as destruction of animal habitats as shown by the homeless polar bear continue to create the need for interventions to stop further damages. Water resources are already highly strained in many places due to an uneven water distribution in both time and space, and future changes to distribution of fresh water resources remain poorly understood. It is therefore important to address the impacts of global warming. The paper looks at a pictorial advert that depicts the seriousness of the damaging effects of global warming. The advert creates visual impression of the negative effects of global warming by showing how animals such as polar bear suffer from the effects of global warming. The artist uses rhetoric in the advert, particularly pathos and ethos, in an effective manner to put across the message that global warming must be curbed.
The artist is effective in putting the message that global warming must be stopped across. The artist uses the picture of the polar bear and the deserted state of the surroundings to show the implications of failure to take actions to prevent global warming. The rhetoric aspect in the advert, therefore, establishes the seriousness with which global warming reduction interventions should be approached. The effects, as depicted in the advert, is warming of the atmosphere that in turn leads to melting of the glaciers that are habitats for polar bears. Instead of the polar bears living in their destined habitats, they have since tried to find comfort in places that make it difficult for them to survive. The advert is effective in addressing the hardships animals such as polar bears find when in unfamiliar situations. This is key to making man feel guilty of his actions that continue to cause global warming effects.
The artist, through their advert, paints an emotional visual impression of how the universe is affected by global warming hence by the rhetoric way of passing information to the public. Since global warming is a major concern globally, the artist addresses the need for departure from the traditional forms of transport that rely heavily on fossil fuels. Instead, the artist rhetorically addresses the need for hybrid and fuel-efficient cars that are capable of minimizing the impact of global warming. The ethos presented by the artist is, therefore, effective in stimulating efforts to design fuel efficient cars. Governments can rely on the message passed across by the artist to design policies that limit reliance on personal cars for transport since a larger number of cars is a contributing factors to carbon emissions. The artist argues his or her credibility on the need for hybrid cars by painting a picture of the hardships the polar bear face in efforts to sustain itself in a strange environment.
Rhetoric Situation
The artist uses ethos in arguing the effects of global warming across the globe and the need to engage in efforts to stop further damage to the ozone layer. The events that present themselves in the advert create the need for logical reasoning to prevent further destruction of animal habitats and sustaining the ecosystem. Through the advert, there is clear need for governments across the globe and private stakeholders to engage in ways to stop the effects of climate change. Reliance on hybrid and fuel efficient cars is important since it allows for significant reduction of reliance on fossil fuels as the primary source of energy. Man has to take responsibility for their actions and be accountable for failure to reduce negative practices that in turn lead to destruction of animal habitats. The artist appeals for accountability by arguing on the importance of fuel efficient technologies.
The facial expression shown by the polar bears proves the fact that there is need for quicker interventions to avoid losing animals that enhance aesthetic beauty in the ecosystem. The picture of the surroundings in which the polar bear finds itself in proves that human beings are at risk of destruction since it is a lonely place. The dullness in the advert could be attributed to the fact that the locals have possibly migrated due to the effects of global warming and fear of polar bear invasion. The picture of the homeless polar bear may look funny but on further analysis, the real scenario comes out thereby sinking the message among the readers. The rhetoric appeal from the advert is clear as the artist uses the case of homeless polar bear to argue the seriousness with which the issue of global warming needs to be approached.
The posture of the animal is one that seems to be looking for help which according to the picture could be difficult to find considering the fact that the ad creates the impression of a deserted place. The pathos in the advert is also key to note as the polar bear looks dejected with no hope of life. The fact that it has no company also imply that the effects of global warming could have led to deaths of a significant majority of the polar bears.
However, while there is need to consider the good work done by the artist in creating awareness on the need to stop global warming, there are questions that arise from the advert. The author could have used the scenes around the oceanic habitats of the polar bears to create a more serious description of the situation. Since the polar bears live in the cold areas, the advert could have incorporated the situations in their habitats by showing how the sea level have risen as well as proving that the glacier have melted away thereby destroying their habitats. Regarding the issue of reliance on hybrid and fuel efficient cars, the artist ought to have shown a presentation of effects of cars that rely on fossil fuels by showing how cars emit carbon to the atmosphere.
Conclusion
The advert gives the seriousness with which the issue of global warming should be approached while relying on rhetoric analysis of the situation. The situation in which the polar bear finds itself in is enough to make human beings take actions to stop global warming. The artist suggests a significant step to take among them being reliance on hybrid and fuel efficient cars for transport. This implies that it is only through reduction in carbon emissions and reliance on energy friendly sources of energy that the issue of global warming would be eradicated.
