Introduction
This is a speech where the speaker persuasively requests the citizens to elect him. After reading it, we realize that it qualifies to be rhetoric hence we can analyze it rhetorically. Concerning the rhetorical situation, the occasion that leads to the opportunity or need for persuasion in this speech is campaign. Therefore, the historical occasion is the campaign by various politicians hence Roversi’s objective in this speech is to persuade citizens to elect him as their country representative. He establishes his personal credibility, confidence, and character in a convincing manner. This is what is termed as ethos. In addition, his words are emotional laden, utilizes repetition and description to further persuade citizens to elect him. This is what is called pathos. Roversi also applies the logical appeal to persuade the audience. It is evident in the speech how the speaker utilizes reasoning with an aim of attracting the attention of the audience. For instance, in his speech he has used comparisons, definitions, and law, among others so as to convince the voters to elect him. This is what in literature is called logos.
After going through the speech, we also realize that there are various instances where other AP English language terms have been utilized by the speaker. He does this with a specific objective, which as mentioned is to persuade the voters. The various rhetoric devices that the speaker utilizes in his speech include Alliteration, Antistrophe, Aphorism, diction, satire, syntax, Hyperbole, tone, ethos, pathos, and logos. Starting with the alliteration, it is obvious that the speaker has repeated his sounds in the speech. For instance, he says “we want unity, we want security and we can have that if we choose the right leader.” There are other instances in the speech where the author has utilized this rhetorical device. His purpose in using alliteration is to make his speech enjoyable and as a result convinces the audience who in this case are voters why he is their preferred candidate.
The speaker has also used antistrophe device where he has repeated a similar word at the end of the successive clauses. For example, he says “The people wanted it, fought to have it, and got it.” Thus, by him repeating the word it, it clearly demonstrates that this important rhetorical devise has been used to convince the audience. Aphorism is the other rhetorical device that is present in this speech. This is where the speaker has used various terse statements that express a moral principal or a general truth. A good example is when he says “We will practice and preach democracy, as it is the backbone of peace and stability in any political arena” Gustavo does this so as to convince the audience that he is knowledgeable and they do not have any reason of not electing him.
The speaker has also not left diction, as a rhetorical device in his speech. His choices of words particularly their clearness, correctness and effectiveness suggest that his speech is a persuading one. He uses words that are effective; this means that his choice of words clearly shows that the rhetorical situation in this speech is campaign. For instance, he uses words like democracy, security, invest, my desire, eradicate poverty, among others all of which are effective in persuading the audience. In addition, the speaker has used satire rhetorical device. His speech mentions a human vice that is rebellion 1088 where he says that citizens rebelled so as to unite their God given territories. Thus, this is satire since by mentioning it, he means that if elected he will bring reforms by ensuring that the liberators efforts will not be wasted.
The speaker has not left syntax in his speech. This is proved by him using groups of words that are clear, effective, and correct. The speech is full of phrases that are very clear, correct, and more effective in persuading the voters why Gustavo Roversi is their preferred candidate. For example, he uses groups of words like “My desire to run for this office is not self-centered,” “nor is it a depiction of any selfish interests,” “vital to the economic growth,” among others that directly shows their effectiveness. Additionally, there is the use of tone in this speech. After going through the speech, we realize Gustavo’s attitude towards his audience. In this case, the tone is formal since he is seeking a formal office.
Furthermore, there is use of hyperbole where in many instances; the speaker has used phrases that exaggerate what he is going to do. For example, he says that he will make Scotland a “land of opportunity and prosperity.” Ethos, pathos, and logos have also been utilized by the speaker as mentioned in the third paragraph. In a nut shell, Gustavo Roversi in his speech has utilized the above and other rhetorical devices hence they all propel the purpose of his speech which is to persuade the voters to elect him and as a result we can say that his speech is rhetoric.
