Introduction
The criminal justice system is heavily relied upon for internal as well as external security. Law enforcement officers, who form the foundation of the CJS, devote their lives crime eradication with their collective quest for safer neighborhoods. However, the task gets heavier depending on the prevalence of crime in the station`s neighborhood. This paper documents a ride along shift in Compton station with Sheriff Barkon Dimitriy.
After a briefing regarding the station`s structure scope and officials, Sheriff Barkon shared alarming statistics that killings in 2016 have tripled thus explaining its tag as one of the most dangerous places. For this reason the station was a hive of activity since all officials tried to triple their efforts and clean the streets.
Field
The highly awaited moment finally came, after strict instructions to wear a bullet proof vest and stay in the patrol car in case of any shooting, we set out. To a normal eye, the surroundings seemed calm, and a majority of businesses open. Though unspoken, it was notable that the citizens gave a sigh of relief once they saw the Barkon`s patrol car possibly as an assurance of safety and temporary peace. A few minutes later we came across a 76 Gas station where gunmen killed two men, mid last month. Business seemed usual, but the memories surely lived on. Within the last one month, Martin Mendiola, Martin Arias, Richard Williams, Boston Keith Farley, Andre Duane McMihelk Jr, Anthony Lee Alexander, Robert Bruce Leflore, Cesar Martin Aragon were killed in shootings. However, the sheriff is optimistic that things would get better (Marantos, 2016).
As I conclude, the indispensable role played by Law enforcement officials is evident even from the relief on citizen`s faces during patrols. This ride along reminded me to appreciate these everyday heroes in their line of duty.
