What are some of the unique responsibility of board of directors? Comment on whether one or more group is important to another in fundraising.
The primary responsibility of the board, is to ensure the success of the organization and to ensure that it achieves its mission. For an organization to function and meet its mission, it requires money. Thus, the board has a crucial role in fundraising. This role in particularly important in a nonprofit organization. In most instances, the executive director of the board is the primary fundraiser. He is likely to raise more fund in terms of size and type, when compared to the rest of the board. Other staffs in the organization, support the board of directors by making proposals, providing supporting documents and other aids required for fundraising. The staff or other members of the board do the research that helps to find potential funders. The members can also make solicitation visits. Some of the functions the board of directors can do to achieve the fundraising goals of the organization include: make a personal fund contribution to the organization; understand and sanction the fundraising programs and strategies developed by the members; thank the contributors; and communicate to the donors and the fundraisers the unique mission of the organization and on how the funds will be used to meet this mission. (Meury, 2012)
As a board of director one must be good at asking for fund contributions at the appropriate time, in addition to supporting the fund raising activities of the organization staffs. The board can establish a fundraising team and ensure that it is properly staffed and has the necessary resources for its activity. The board directors are the official host of the organization and they are expected to show up in organization meetings and other prominent events that help to promote the organization. The board of directors formulate fund raising plans and the volunteers help in execution of these plans. The success of the plan and responsibility of raising funds for the organization rests with the board of directors. (Murray & Harrison, 2014)
