The United States has had controversial topics among them being the same sex marriage bills. Different political parties have sharply aired their differences on the gay marriage issues. The existing laws have thus left the states to be the principal determinants of whether gay marriage is legal or illegal within their borders. Both exponents and proponents of the legalization of gay marriage have strong convictions and reasons as to how same sex marriage should be handled in society. This paper however embraces the latter view that same sex marriage should not be legalized because it is not about sexuality or identity. Same sex marriage is as a result of post-industrial transformations in society and is problematic to society. This position is shaped by the four important points which will be thoroughly discussed in this paper.
In addition, it is important to understand that the legalization of same sex marriage promotes homosexuality in society. As many civil laws and civil unions agitate for the acceptance of same sex marriage in society, they tend to influence the minds and though patterns of people. This means that many people who might not approve of same sex marriage before might want to try out homosexual lifestyles. In addition, it is important to note that the younger generations are in a period whereby they are making decisions in life about the type of lifestyles that they would love to lead. The presence of civil laws and civil unions that validate the idea of same sex marriage influences young men and women to adopt homosexual lifestyles. Society is governed by a set of morals that maintain its sanity and stability. The presence of civil laws and civil unions that seek to justify the acceptance of moral evils such as gay marriage breeds young men and women that have weaker morality. Weakness in public morality is as a result of the fact that civil laws and civil unions fighting for the legalization of same sex marriage creates the notion that moral wrongs that result from the lack of discipline can be forced into the acceptable moral codes of society using legal and civil processes (Woelki 125-126).
Third, it is important to realize that same sex marriage deprives children the ability to have both a father and a mother in their lives. Each parent in a given marriage plays a fundamental role and responsibility in the life of a child (Krohn 103-104). Many people around the world have been influenced by the successes or failures of either their fathers or mothers. Considering that both men and women have different personalities, children in heterosexual marriages are able to benefit from both the influences of their mothers and father. Same sex marriage puts children in difficult situations whereby there are brought up in family settings that include parents from the same sex (Woelki 116). For example, boys who are brought up in a family that comprises of two female parents might have a difficult being ability to develop their male qualities. This is because they have no person of their own sex that guide and advise them on matters that are related to their own sex. It is important to note that there are some issues that are only understandable by a person of the same sex. Same sex marriages also put children in a difficult situation whereby there are raised by one parent that they do not have blood ties with. Considering that members of the same sex cannot procreate, one of the parents with the same sex marriage will not have blood ties with the children within the marriage. Therefore, there is a high likelihood that there is lack of connection between children and the parent that lacks blood connection with them (Woelki 158). It is hence clear that same sex marriage denies children the ability to have role models in their life, either a mother or a father, to whom they can look up to.
Fourth, same sex marriage is not a civil right it is a reflection of increasing moral decadence in society. Many of the proponents of same sex marriage have made the argument that the illegalization of gay marriage breaches upon their civil rights (Woelki 127). However, it is important to go back to the idea of what leads people to embrace same sex marriage. People in same sex unions are not driven by their urge to contribute to procreation. Same sex marriage is as a result of lust among men and women. Gratification of sexual encounters of men and women with members of the same sex has been the driving force that has led many people to embrace same sex marriage. This gratification for sexual encounters cannot fall into the category of civil rights. In retrospect, same sex marriage is a moral wrong that shows weakness in public morality (Woelki 126). The justification of same sex lust and sexual encounters cannot be compared with important fights such as equal treatment of the black race in the United States. Instead, proponents of same sex marriage have used the weakening public morality as a policy window where same sex marriage can be grouped as being a civil right. The fight for equal treatment of the black race is something that is unchangeable. This is because one cannot change the color of their skin so that there are acceptable in society. However, proponents of same sex marriage can change their behavior so that they are acceptable in society. This is achievable by changing their lifestyle so that they are able to embrace upright and moral lifestyles.
In conclusion, same sex marriage should not be legalized because same sex marriage cannot fit into the traditional paradigm of the concept of marriage. Secondly, same sex marriage deprives children the ability to have both a father and a mother in their lives. Third, sex marriage promotes homosexuality tendencies in society. Finally, same sex marriage is not a civil right it is a reflection of increasing moral decadence in society.
