Sample Admission Essay On Why I Want To Become A Nurse

Even at a young age I knew I wanted to help people, I just did not know which profession was best. I became a wife and mother fairly young, and began a career financing Real Estate Developments. After my children were of age, and the real estate market tanked for a second time, I knew it was time to return to school. I returned to college and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Although I was helping people, I felt destined to work in the Health Care field. In 2010 I received a degree from Pima College as a Medical Assistant.
While working as a Medical Assistant, Registrar and in the Occupational Medicine Unit at Dignity Health and Scottsdale Healthcare, I got a chance to work with various patients and further develop my love for patient care. I assisted with triaging, obtaining patients’ vitals, lab draws, CDL physicals, performing EKG's, and various other duties. I really enjoyed interacting with the patients, and realized how I made a huge impact in their lives on a daily basis.
I was also inspired to become a nurse by my stepfather. He was an Air Force veteran, who became a nurse while in his 40’s. He worked as an Emergency Room nurse and constantly talked about the joys of working with patients. My stepfather was proud of my decision to follow my dreams and told me that I was not too old to go to nursing school. Although he has passed away from a brain tumor, I know that my stepfather is watching over me and will guide me on my path to becoming a nurse. I plan to make him proud.
Although patient care is directed by physicians, it is the nurses who provide the interaction, constant monitoring, companionship and general care of the patient. A nurse gives patients strength during their recovery and promotes patient health. After graduating with my nursing degree I plan to help others and give back to my community. I want to work in the Oncology or ER Department, where some of the most critically ill patients are in need of care.
