The United States is still reeling in the aftermath of a Donald Trump presidency and the surprises it may bring with it. In Paul Krugman’s article, Donald Trump’s Medical Delusions, it is clear that there are inadequacies of the Trump attacks of Obamacare. “Repeal and replace” turns out to have been a political slogan because the changes proposed by the Conservatives/ Republicans may never see the light of day.
Repealing Obamacare was a campaign strategy that may have won Donald Trump the presidency but its viability leads to a lot of questions raised as to whether it is practical to do so. Millions of Americans stand to lose their insurance overnight and the move will not be bringing people any solutions but rather throwing them deep into debts and unaffordable medical care. If any subsidies are eliminated, many Americans will have to bow out because the Act has a clause that permits that.
Trump and the GOP will be tasked to bring on board whatever policy they have to replace Obamacare, but the truth is that they may never do so because it is impractical to overturn everything within the grace period provided for in two years. Besides the GOP has not been able to provide a solution to the Affordable Care Act, who knows if they will deliver this time round. The implications of such a move will force almost twenty million Americans off insurance, and that might not go down well with the electorate.
The health reforms that have been achieved in the past couple of years cannot be overturned on a political campaign trail. The Republicans have been hoodwinked by the political class to believe that everything about Democrats goes against their ideals even when they are beneficiaries of the Obama regime. Much is yet to be seen with regard to what the Republicans are willing to do to bring a better medical plan for the underprivileged Americans.
