According to McChesney, the conventional wisdom refers to the quick development of impressive new technologies and sophisticated markets that provide the people what they look for. In addition, such developments motivate them for the economic growth through the information. He gives an example of the British media which is dependent on the market for the media regulation. The deregulation normally attributes to the process of commercialization .
How does McChesney respond to this?
He criticizes the role of the US government for retaining its monopoly in terms of control of media. He mentions that the aim of profit maximization through the journalism has affected the role of media and has put journalism into a crisis. The close interaction of government and corporate media challenges the integrity of media. In case of a monopolised structure, free market forces do not work efficiently. If the media is monopolistic and aims for only profit maximization then the priority would not be the public serving rather money making .
In my personal view point, the media should be regulated so that it may not exploit the public interests. The deregulated media may not provide a fair and true picture of the situation which could be misleading for the viewers or readers.
