Social Media development has become a revolution in the past years. It took communication on the next level, complementing more traditional socializing and leveraging on the wide spread of computers and mobile devices. Indeed, social media has numerous benefits. It has opened a new way for people to express themselves, and helps to stay connected despite distance and time. It has also brought the way to do business on a new level, giving an opportunity to companies to stay closer to their customers and to study customer preferences in a new way. However, together with the benefits social media has created numerous threats, especially for children, who are easily influenced by messages spread through the web. That is why it may be useful for parents to control or at least keep track of their child’s activities on the social media.
Of course, it is hardly realistic to suggest that people over 13 years old (and even before) can be controlled or prevented from using social media. To achieve that, parents would need to block access to internet, a measure that is neither realistic nor desirable in the contemporary world. Hence, it is necessary to overlook rather than control child’s activities, to become a “friend” on social media and to participate in the online life of the child. It is important to understand that at restrictions and prohibitions can achieve an opposite result, and children would try to hide what they are doing online and will be more easily influenced by externals.
It is hard to determine the age, when children can be left without control. Very often it depends on individual maturity and not on the actual age. Even adults often become victims of social media, both by falling under someone’s influence and by exposing their private lives. In the U.S. Facebook pictures have been used as supporting evidence in the court, while people openly threatening others on the web have been sentenced to prison time. That makes one really think about the role of social media in the contemporary world, and the precautions we should both to protect our children and our personal life.
