A variety of health education facts and information would be beneficial to teens. Some of these topics would include sexual education, fitness, nutritional services and drug and alcohol education. Sex education should be included in all teen education programs. Teens must be aware of their changing bodies, birth control options and aware of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s). Teens also would benefit from fitness education and literature on how to stay healthy. This should be coupled with nutritional services and dietary services. Drugs and alcohol educational information is also essential as part of a health education program. With so many teens trying drugs and alcohol, it is important for this information to be available to them. A comprehensive health education program will keep teens healthy and well informed.
There are many websites available to health education specialists to use as resources when working with teens and young adults. Some of the best websites that would be useful to teens would be www.kidshealth.org, www.teenshealthconnection.org, and www.cdc.gov. The kidhealth.org website is a very user friendly website. The website provides a variety of health topics and is also available in Spanish. This website has a question and answer page, and fun health related quizzes throughout the site. Teens will like this site because it is colorful, has a lot of information, and is managed well by the website owners. The second website, www.teenshealthconnection.org is a good resource that provides several health topics for young people ages 11-22. Some of the education available on the site includes mental health and eating disorders. The Centers for Disease Control’s website, www.cdc.org is a wealth of information. Some topics include obesity, nutrition, STD’s and health disparities. This site is good for teens, because of the vast amount of information available.
