Heather wants to work because she wants to raise money for her college expenses. She has supportive parents, but is the kind of person that likes self-assertion and independence. Additionally, being in business school, Heather thought that she could use the experience from Palazzo show store to improve on her sales techniques. Heather is young and eager to comb her business skills, which Palazzo could ultimately improve. Palazzo seemed like the ideal place for work because it practically had many advantages when compared to the other stores. The benefits are related to the pay in sells and commissions that the employees got. The experience and training received and working in a store that could appear to be perfect because of the way it was managed was astounding. The employees had the spirit to excel despite the challenges that were involved in working at the store. When it came to payment, the sells personnel at Palazzo made 20% more than what the other employees in the stores around them did. The reason is that the image of the shoes store was well nurtured and made it easy for the store to get customers when it was compared to the competitors. The more customers who walked in the store denoted more commission for the employees because of the influx. The employees, therefore, had the opportunity to earn more money, which would not have been the case elsewhere. Ava was the reason that the store made that much because of the way she insisted on perfection. Another advantage is that the store employees treat each other with fairness and have a schedule where everybody gets a chance of earning something.
The main problem in Palazzo is the manner in which Ava treats her employees. She does not care about their personal needs and often appears as rude. The useful tool that a manager can employ to motivate their employees is having a professional but friendly relationship with them. The same does not apply in this case because Ava is stern as a manager. It can be understood that she is stern because she intends to push the store toward perfection, but she does not consider that the employees have a life outside of work. The employees interact with her in the sense that they fear her, which should not be the scenario. For instance, when an employee prefers to work at a lower rank because they cannot stand the extra pressure that a new position would bring, then there is a problem. For instance, Michael would not accept the Job of being an assistant manager because of the pressure of working close to Ava. The interactions of the employees with Ava are limited to the work that they do. She does not take interest in their other life, according to the work-life doctrine that contemporary managers have employed. Therefore, the result is that employees do not have the time to attend to their needs and are less motivated. Isabella had a reasonable need for going to visit her grandparents, but Ava would not let her. She was further rude when she told Isabella to either visit them now when they are still alive or when they will be dead. Because of such happening, the interaction with employees is strained. Ava seems to appreciate the traditional forms of managerial and employee communication whereby managers had to exert all their power on the employees. The result would be an unfriendly environment between the administrative body and the employees. The interactions between the two at the store are strained, and the workers appear to fear or resent her.
Also, from the reading, it can be inferred that Ava is unfair in her treatment of employees and interactions with them. There are those that are treated fairly by average and reasonable standards, and there are those who are given a hard time. For instance, Michael, who makes the most sells, is treated fairly and can manage to interact with Ava on a fairly better note. He is the only one among the employees who does not seem to have a hard time with her. The rest of the employees are terrified with her presence. In such scenarios, it is difficult for a manager to understand or relate to the needs of her employees. The result is a substantial part of the staff does not care about the store and would sneak out to go and smoke pot as seen in the case study.
Also, Ava does not take any time to appreciate and compliment the efforts that the employees put in. They register surprising good sells but remain to be the least valued employees in the shoe selling industry. Consequently, they interact with Ava in a way that showcases their distaste. The majority of them do not like her and see her as an unappreciative and mean tyrant. The only thing that motivates the employees in Palazzo is the money that they get from the store. They would, perhaps, not earn the same amount had they been employed elsewhere, or in other jobs. The interactions with Eva in the store are limited, and most of the employees would rather stay off her limits if they intend to keep their jobs.
Heather would probably not help her boyfriend because there is nothing much that she can do, but it would have helped in the aspect of motivation if her wish had been afforded. If she had told Ava about the terrorist situation, it is not guaranteed that she would have understood but Ava would have knowledge of it.
