I would like to begin by first thanking every single one of you for joining me in this celebration tonight. The best moments in life are really only the best when you have people to share them with, and I wouldn’t feel what I’m feeling right now if it weren’t for all you looking back at me, with hearts so generously offering endless amounts of praise, love and support. We spend so much of our time trying to make something of ourselves and leave a print on this world, but it’s times like these when I realize that the true currency in life is the relationships you have at the end of the day. So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.
We are told all the time to be present, to live in the moment, to treat each day like your last. This is one of those rare moments in life, where I feel like I can’t do anything but that. These are the moments that, when they actually happen, leave you in a kind of surreal state of mind, because you realize you have cradled this dream in the deepest corner of your heart for so long. It’s when you realize that patience is a virtue for a reason, and that our modern day curse of instant gratification really robs you of the incredible feeling I’m experiencing right now. It’s worth every moment that I worried it would never happen and every moment that I chose to hold the vision of my dream in spite of doubts and obstacles. Every one of us knows what it feels like to want something badly, to want to turn a dream into reality, to prove to ourselves that we are both worthy and capable of achieving our dreams. Because if there’s one thing that we all share, it’s our dreams. We all were born with the intrinsic knowing that we were meant to live an extraordinary life. We were born with a faith and confidence in ourselves that we lose little by little as we grow older, because of other peoples’ opinions—which are really just judgments about themselves. Even when, as adults, we realize that we actually are worthy of accomplishing what our heart truly desires, we have to undo so much of the negative programming that was a result of our surroundings coupled with our malleable concepts of ourselves. Perception truly is reality, and this realization can be both liberating and daunting. Because that means, that the only thing holding you back is what you believe about yourself.
There is an idea that your gifts become your curse if you don’t share them. I think we all know what it feels like to stifle our heart’s true longings and distract ourselves with busy-ness or hedonistic pleasure. In the end, we can never run away from our true selves. And there’s a reason for that. There’s a quote by Robert Bresson that says, “Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen.” That idea just stops me in my tracks, because I realize that I do matter. You matter. Every single person in this room matters. We fight through so much self-doubt and ridicule, and it’s not our fault. It’s everyone’s programming going against each other, when our real nature would have us cooperating with one another, supporting one another, appreciating one another. That is why before I started this speech, I had to thank every single one of you. When we allow someone to shine in all their brightness, it touches something inside us that reminds us that we are all connected. Ram Dass has a beautiful quote that says, “We are all just walking each other home.” And by home, I believe that that is where we all came from before we chose to inhabit these fleshy spacesuits and take this amazing journey as a human being. It’s so easy to feel separated and isolated, to feel like “I’m me” and “you’re you.” And yes, we all have unique purposes that can’t be copied or replaced. But deep inside us, we all share one holy flame, that spark of divinity that makes us all brothers and sisters in spirit. So we are really never alone. It’s all an illusion. And what I’m feeling right now, as I speak to all of the beautiful souls looking back at me, is what I believe to be true heaven on earth. It’s when we let go of our individual ideas of who we are, what makes us special or different from everyone else, and we see that all of us basically want the same thing. We want to feel like we matter, we want to feel loved and appreciated and accepted for who we are—apart from what we do or can do.
So actually, while we are all here to celebrate this incredible accomplishment, I think the true celebration is the fact that we all came here together, to just be together, and to feel all the things that money can’t buy, all the things that success can’t bring: and that is oneness and connection.
Again, thank you for being here with me to celebrate the fact that we can make our biggest, most unthinkably amazing dreams come true. But more importantly, most importantly, I thank you for opening up your hearts and allowing the space for a sister to shine in her light. I hope that you feel my warmth being extended to you, and know that I can feel yours. I am so happy in this moment, and I’m so honored to be with all of you.
Thank you.
