In the 1980s the society and its surroundings were dull and dark gray. There was no “enlightenment” or even some hints at vivid tones. Although the world was imbued with dark colors and manners, there were plenty of rebels who tried to ruin it. One of the influential innovations, which were done during that period, was graffiti. The era of graffiti began in New York but was widespread all over the world including Paris. This movie describes this era from the very beginning and demonstrates its influence the people, culture, and society in general.
In the very beginning of graffiti establishment, it was hard to define it as an art. One of the establishers of Paris graffiti Jay BBC doesn’t deny that they didn’t have any particular style, all that they did was just some pieces. Futura 2000 has the same opinion and adds that that was just a beginning and it took a few years to make it more serious and professional. But the more minutes of the movie we see, the more explanations we get.
As it was mentioned in the very beginning, the establisher of graffiti movement in Paris is an artist Bando. It makes sense that there are a lot of interviews with him since he’s the most significant and influential not only in the movie but also in the whole graffiti era. As he remembers every detail and retells how own story in a very confident way, we can see a solid picture of bearing the graffiti era. He was not only the establishment of a graffiti movement in Paris in general but also he was one who created European Style which differed from common New-York one. He explains the peculiarities and specific details to this new – Paris style.
Besides the history being told by a speaker, the strength of this movie is in its visual aids. There are plenty of interviews, photos of the graffiti and graffiti artists as well. After discovering them, we have a picture of that time and can imagine how it was hard but still inspiring and rewarding to be a graffiti artist. We also have an image of the situation that graffiti was connected with the also brand new movement – hip hop. So, there are a lot of video of that time b-boys dancing near the walls which were full of graffiti.
There is also one thing which is hard to be determined whether as good or bad – the language of the movie. I guess, it is a thing which makes the audience be curious and careful concerning watching the movie. The main language of the movie is French. However, plenty of graffiti artist (e.g. Bando, Futura 2000, A.One) use the English Language in their interviews. Additionally, there is a case of using both languages together in the same speech and it makes the audience first confused, then amused. For instance, Jonone 156 is speaking both languages to express all his emotions and thoughts connected with this issue.
But talking about weakens of the movie. It’s still debatable but it should be mentioned that the background music is somehow annoying and distracts a viewer from thorough acquiring of the details and the information in general. I guess the director tried to show the mood of the 1980s by including this type of music. But this music is nothing more than weird additional background which makes you hesitate what and why you are watching.
After watching this movie, the audience should understand that graffiti is not just a painting some signs or letters in tunnels, bridges or just walls. It’s a history of a new art with its heroes and their brevity to face every problem, burden, and despair. We should be full of respect for these people who were fast in their thought and worldview as they manage to run away from the dull stereotype art and just from police, and show people new movement which is so popular and worldwide nowadays.
