Battle of the brands, one way to define the daily bombardment of advertisement in different media. People see different attacks and styles in advertising, where various companies are trying to outwit each other. The concept of advertising is simply to product products and services. However, in order to capture the attention of people, companies incorporate different techniques to rise above their competition. Advertisements are based on consumers’ behavior and how they perceive a product. Advertisements vary in length, media, sensory effect and even endorsers are involved. Advertisement is good for the market and the economy because it provides a healthy competition. Many products with the same nature need to outsmart the other in order to attract more buyers. Advertisements provide more options to the consumer because they are not limited to only one brand. In the clothing industry, for instance, many clothing lines attempt to gain more consumers through media propaganda, through this people are given more choices. Moreover, advertisement is good because it can be used to disseminate information to the public. Non-government organizations, government departments and other public offices use advertisement to share needed details to reach a greater demographics. The appeal of the advertisements to the public makes the information sharing easier and more interactive.
However, advertisements can also be used to mislead people by providing false promises and claims. This instance is true for some beauty products that over-sell their products through ‘out-of-this-world’ details. Slimming products, for example, that guarantees weight loss in only a number of days, tend to provide misleading information to the consumer, because the guarantee seems impossible and unhealthy. Misleading information can provide negative impact to the consumer; they can affect the person psychologically and emotionally because some people can be dependent on the product despite its unhealthy side effects and implications. Some people fall victim to empty promises from various companies that provide unrealistic assurance of effectiveness. It may foster harmful dependent to the product that may potentially trigger health problems in the future.
Advertisements are necessary to the market because it allows people to know more about the product, the main argument against advertisements companies tend to over-exaggerate their claims resulting to unrealistic promises to people. It is important for advertisements to be regulated in order to follow standards and regulations to protect the consumers from fraud. Countries usually have regulating boards to ensure that advertisements do not violate any laws or norms in society. In business ethics, advertisements are provided with standards in order for companies to avoid lying to their customers. Herbal products, for example, usually contain disclaimers at the end of their advertisement that the product has no approved therapeutic claim.
In conclusion, because of the ability of advertisements to reach a wider audience due to the advancement of technology and the continuous innovation in the industry, it is important to have moderation. Moderation ensures that advertisements are used to promote products and not devalue any human norms and laws. Advertisements also promote consumer behaviors because it provides not only options but teach the consumers to be wiser in selecting products. Advertisements are key to the encouragement of a healthy competition in the market, but it is important to make sure that they do not show illegal contexts that will impact the social dynamics.
