All art is not created equal. In Pablo Picasso’s piece, Three Women 1909 and Girl with a Mandolin in 1910, striking similarities and differences appear between the two. Both these abstract pieces are similar in their shapes, form and movement, but differ in color, subject and geometric form.. Each of these pieces are instrumental in covering the themes of movement and shape. Although that clearly represent the movement and power of love and closeness. And yet, as much as they are alike, they are equally as different.
Upon viewing Three Women, the silhouettes of the three women, entangled together and draped in hues of rouge with a blue background, infuse the colors together to create a warm earth tone. Whereas Girl with a Mandolin, the colors are muted beige and off-white, cool earth tone colors that blend together seamlessly. Both paintings cover the same sense of perspective and line. The colors drape over each other as if juxtaposed.
Both paintings however also, explore different elements of composition of each painting including color, line, geometric form, perspective and size. The use of colors in each painting are different, but the subtle lines throughout
While similar in the sense that both share composition dynamics, Girl with a Mandolin is different from Three Women in that the lines behind the figure is stronger than those included in the latter. In each painting, however, each part of the women and the background are divided into clear shapes; squares, obtuse angles and triangles, are sprinkled among rectangles and misplaced squares. The peace that engulfs the figures in each painting is direct and calming. The black lines that outline the colors throughout place greater emphasis on the colors within. What is striking about both these pieces is the blending of the colors, shading and outlining creates a three-dimensional perspective in both paintings.
The details are the most intricate when involving the way the colors intertwine and cascade against each other. The way we interpret these paintings depend upon our understanding of the spatial elements engraved in the canvas, welcoming the viewer into the secret world of women. It was a contrast in that, Girl with a Mandolin, revealed a woman into her craft - playing the mandolin with ease and sophistication. In Three Women , three figures blend together to create a sense of unity. It also represents beauty and femininity as we see the curvaceousness of the women’s hips, alluding to a form of inner strength.
In closing, comparing and contrasting both Picasso’s Girl with a Mandolin and Three Women shared similar themes of expression and movement. The paintings are transformed beyond the subject matter, while differing in its use of movement, linear perspective and symmetry, they were similar in the style, form and geometric shape. Art exists in order to make us think a little deeper about what we do and who we are as a people. It can also be used as a social commentary on the topics of the day, depicting women as its subjects. The women are mysterious but sensual and beautiful. The brush strokes in each of them illustrate the silhouettes and not the actual figures, a key component in many abstract art pieces. While each piece contains similar shapes and lines and utilizing women as subjects, they differ in their blended color schemes, subject and tone, proving that art interpretation is in the eye of the beholder.
