The conclusion of high school carries glad tidings for all of us. It holds promise of a future, the challenge of stepping out it in unknown and most important of all, the excitement of finding out where we fit the world. The experience could however also become temperately overwhelming for quite a few of us. The supplementary knowledge that not all of us are auspicious enough to have the means and resources to progress to this phase of our lives makes us that much more beholden. Therefore, no matter how much determination and anticipation we conjure up before progressing on from high school, we find ourselves tumbling back and forth and fighting hard to regain control of our lives during the first few months of college. It is a big step up for all of us. College requires us to become a lot more conscientious, controlled and organized, and no experience in our precedent lives prepares us for this confrontation. The only way to learn and master it is by facing the challenges head-on.
In high-school, we find ourselves overburdened with class routines, hastening out of one class and back into another. And ditching class is always out of the question, seeing how we find ourselves being pursued by our teachers who are constantly making attempts to force us into every single class each day. In contrast, classes in college are separated by gaps in between, where we get the time to relax and unwind before the next class. Our teachers also don’t have ample time to chase after us and make us sit in all of the periods. And if we miss something important, it becomes our own responsibility to deal with the lessons. Missing too many classes could ultimately end in us failing, or the teacher kicking us out of the class. Bottom line, we are responsible for our own study and are expected to act responsibly and to suitably manage our time. In high school, our study schedule is mapped out for us by our teachers through regular tests and assignments. In the end, we don’t feel burdened while preparing for our finals since we have already been made to go through our entire course meticulously. On the contrary, our college teachers don’t give a lot of test, and if we do get tested, the test course forms a major part of our entire curriculum which we are expected to prepare in very diminutive time. Our college teachers also cannot make time to check our assignments so we often end up lacking in one part of our curriculum or another. So we have to work twice as hard and under immense stress while preparing for our finals.
Co-curricular activities in high school are infrequent and for attendance, we require authorization from our parents. Despite every obstacle, we often manage to attend all. But in college, various co-curricular activities are taking place around us, and we are not even required to ask for anyone’s permission, yet we often don’t attend because the activity is either interfering with our classes’ schedule, or our test schedules, or probably because we have a lot of study to catch up on. Moreover, all our classes are scheduled by the school administration during high school whereas in college, we are required to draw up our own schedule with the help of the guidance counselor. In high school, our teachers and parents are consummating character building and we could often lean on them to remind us of our responsibilities including study schedules and incomplete assignments, but our college teachers expect us to be responsible and mature adults and treat us as such, giving us no room for error. Apart from the mammoth stress that those expectations put us through, they also give us a chance to prove to ourselves that with the right motivation, we could push ourselves to attain plenty.
There are however a few parts of our lives that we carry through to the college era. For instance, the most special friends stay with us even after high-school, and they are always there to support us through the hard times, regardless of whether or not they go to the same college as us. Also, our parents are there to help us through all our troubles and just like in high-school; we find that they are there to support us through formidable times. The courses that we take during college are mostly similar to the courses in high school. They are based upon similar concepts but are a little more extensive.
In my opinion, college is a time that is more demanding than high school. This is the time when all the major responsibilities shift from our teachers’ and parents to our own shoulders, including working out a study routine, planning class schedules, keeping up with the teachers, and being responsible for all the tests and assignments. For many, the journey from high schools to college also signifies financial stability. During high school, most of our finances are borne by our parents but during college, there is a shift in responsibility. We may need to juggle job, college and study and allocate suitable time between the three. Plus, on one hand where high schools still affords us the aberrations while making decisions, our college education is the basis for our future career and thereupon, we find ourselves burdened with the responsibility of taking major decisions that are nitty-gritty to our future. It is only after being laden with such boundless responsibility that we learn to value and esteem the efforts of our high school teachers. They suddenly seem so parental and concerned for our well being, the fact that we are too obstinate to comprehend during high school.
