Charting Nursing’s Future is a series of policy briefs on topics of interest to nurses whose publication is sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The purpose of the policy briefs is to enlighten key stakeholders in health care set up such hospital managers, nurse leaders and the state and national policymakers on different matters related to nursing profession (Nurse 61). The briefs also seek to bring to light the important role of nurses in promoting a culture of health. Moreover, the series of the briefs covers a broad array of topics related to nursing which can be clustered into three major classes: matters affecting patient care, issues affecting the nursing profession and factors that affect individual nurses.
Most of the briefs focus on patient care because it’s the core of nursing profession, with the main topic addressed in the briefs being patient safety in the healthcare setting. Under this topic, issues addressed include safety initiatives led by nurses, the importance of adequate nurse staffing and interprofessional collaboration, disease prevention, access, costs and quality of care as well as associated policy implications (Nurse 61). On the issues affecting the nursing profession, the briefs mainly focus on nursing education such as lack of nurse faculty and existing gaps between established nursing education and current nurse competencies. The brief also highlights the importance of advanced nursing degrees and the need for change in nursing curricula to integrate quality and safety.
Additionally, the article also notes the importance of the briefs in addressing the issues that affect the health of a nurse as an individual. One such brief focused on how an online free education program equips nurses and also nurse managers with enhanced approaches for dealing with shift work and long working hours (Nurse 61). The brief also focuses on initiatives that help nurses and other healthcare professionals enjoy their work by addressing workplace problems such as bullying, violence burnout, and injuries. Conclusively, the briefs generally address all the pertinent issues affecting nurses and the nursing profession as well as the value of the nursing profession.
