The United States of America is also recognized as the New World. A lot of historians claim that it was discovered by Christopher Columbus. This issue has faced a lot of criticism with many other people being attributed to the discovery of America. In a bid to solve this issue, it is important to analyze a few facts about this country. Christopher Columbus was responsible for commandeering three ships from Spain in the year 1492. He reached the shores of America in October in the same year.
After 1492, America became denoted as ‘the new world’ for a number of reasons. For Native Americans, this was especially brought about by the curiosity of Christopher Columbus that brought about a lot of changes. Native Americans were practically displaced from their native fertile fields because Columbus deemed them as useful. At the same time, the practice of agriculture increased slave trade, endangering the lives of Africans. Columbus ordered his men to build towns. One of the towns known as Jamestown was the first English settlement regions. Clearly, Columbus brought a new meaning to a place that had already been discovered. America became more productive and attractive after Christopher Columbus began working on it and implementing his ideas.
Bias in the book “Give Me Liberty: An American History” by Eric Foner
The perspective that the author presents is that of the voice of people who are under represented in the history of the United States of America. Foner makes a determined effort to relay the experiences of the average citizen as they experienced the revolution of history. While they were players in this unraveling story, they are not given the praise that they deserve. The author does this with a lot of fervor that he even goes ahead to inject personal opinion in this academic text. This contributes largely to its biasness. A good example in this case is where he describes "The New Imperialism." Where certain people had more power and thus exploited the world. While this may be useful, the author did not give the student a chance to exercise their critical- thinking skills. Since this was an academic text, the author should have allowed the students to draw conclusions from the evidence provided. Notwithstanding, it is easy to empathize why the author injects personal opinions. Severally, he keeps referring to anonymous authors. For example, he says “one historian has written ” It is important to associate information with a certain author especially for academic articles.
Needless to say, the book provides one with a completely different perspective of the history of America. As he infuses his political beliefs in his book, the history of the country is brought out in a completely different way. This is where one views the contribution of Native Americans and Africans as positive to the history of America. Basically, he provides a clear outlook into the history of America, and whatever occurrences occurred before its discovery.
