There are a number of different characterizations shown on TV. Many are easily recognizable due to their popularity. The following classifies some of more popular characterizations on television.
FEMALE-These characters can be broken down into Antagonists and Protagonists. The female Antagonists can be further sorted into the following categories (1) the Femme Fatale (Katherine Pierce Vampire Diaries) who uses sex to manipulate people into giving her what she wants, she is usually portrayed as being cold and unfeeling (2) The Over-Controlling Mother (Norma Bates in Bates Hotel) this is the type of mother who cannot let go of her kids. Her desire to be needed can take a dangerous obsessive turn (3) The Woman Scorned (Becky Flynn Scandal) this is a woman who demands respect and refuses to accept any type of betray. Instead she will seek it exact her vengeance.
The Female Protagonists can be sorted into the following classifications (1) the Lady of War is a powerful woman who is competitive yet feminine Sara Lance in Legends of Tomorrow is an example (2) the Iron Lady (Lexa The 100) is a woman who is constantly trying to further her career. She usually does this by connecting to the males at her place of business. In most cases she does not have a health relationship with other females. She also tends to be studious and introverted. (3) the Nurturer is a woman who has lost her identity in caring for the needs of others, an example of this is Mrs. Hudson in Sherlock (4) the Matriarch (Madeline Westen Burn Notice) is the female head of a family who remains steadfastly loyal to her family no matter what. Despite her loyalty she is aware of their faults. She also tends to be arrogant, stubborn and overbearing (5) the Ingénue (Brittany Glee) is a young girl/ childlike adult female who has a naïve/ innocent view of the world. They tend to trust people they should not and to let others worry about the trivial parts of life.
Like the Female Protagonist the MALE protagonist can be sorted into many groupings. In this paper he will be separated into the following four: The eight Hero archetypes are as follows: (1) the Spock is duty oriented and hates dealing with emotion, Star Trek’s Spock is the forbearer of this Trope (2) The Fool/Trickster (The Trickster/ Loki/ Gabriel in Supernatural) is freedom loving. He refuses to be tie down to a job, relationship or family, He is unconcerned about consequences (3) the Lady’s Man (Tyrion Lannister Game of Thrones) likes to spend most of his time with women. He helps them to achieve their aims or build their confidence (4) the Male Messiah (Dean Winchester Supernatural) is focused on the mission and is willing to sacrifice himself
Male Antagonists are (1) the Dark Messiah (Davros Doctor Who) is a visionary who does not have the patience to deal with those he considers weak or unwilling to except the changes he is implementing (2) the Dictator (The Master Doctor Who) needs to have control. He likes exercise his power over others by playing mind games with them. He is constantly changing the rules of the game and he does not care who gets hurt by his actions (3) the Seducer 9 Mad Men’s Don Draper) only views women as a means of sexual gratification. He has no respect for women and sees them only as objects. (4) Loners are Freaks trope refers to a loner who resents people for not liking him. Sometimes he has no desire to be liked as he sees himself as being superior to others. Sherlock’s Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes are examples of this.
