The paper aims at providing a critical summary of the last part, “Consequences for Education” of Hollenbach’s essay, Is Tolerance Enough? The Catholic University and the Common Good. Hollenbach observes that the challenge that is faced today by members of the catholic and Jesuit higher education is the opposition that has been directed to their beliefs by pluralism. The increase culture awareness based on the western culture and beliefs has continuously opposed their beliefs since they both reason from a very different perspective. The challenge has almost made it impossible for the growth of catholic and Jesuit since the western culture has been positively and quickly adapted by most people in the modern society. It has been made clear that the idea of the common good does not bear any resemblance or acquisition with pluralism. This is because they all have a different perspective about life. It is clear that there are some teachings propagated by the catholic belief which may be relevant in reaching upon solutions, which pluralism may fail to address. Hollenbach tries to address the society while putting across points that challenge pluralism.
There has been a need to try and evaluate what are the causes of the social conflicts that are evident within the society today. There have been a lot of social issues that have been associated with the increase of pluralism. This has made it hard to try and establish of what role pluralism has had in stirring the conflict that has continuously been witnessed in different regions of the world. It has been challenging to try and establish whether these social issues have been as a result of pluralism or because of the social conflict that has been witnessed over the years. It is clear the public has lacked the knowledge that is associated with the common good which is made evident in the teachings that are provided in catholic beliefs. Therefore, pluralism has had a major play in the challenges that are affecting the society. This is because pluralism fails to provide people with the relevant teaching that are required in ensuring that people do not go against the expected code of conduct that is relevant in avoiding the social conflicts that are currently being witnessed in the world. In this instance, Hollenbach states that the society has failed in evaluating the negative impact that pluralism has brought to the society since it fails to abide by any religious beliefs unlike catholic and Jesuit higher education.
The subject on tolerance or alienation is of great controversy. This is due to the different views that are there regarding common good and pluralism based on the way the society and different individuals advocate the need for democracy. The need for democracy has been driven by tolerance where many people in the society want all individuals to get equal opportunities to other religions and beliefs. This has steered a lot of conflicts since it is likely that individuals concerned about these aspects are motivated by the common good. These leaves most people in the society at risk since they are not concerned about the common good. Community welfare can only be made possible through the efforts of like-minded people who can only be brought together by common good that will steer them in the same direction in order to attain the same objectives.
The traditional catholic belief on the common good emphasizes on the need for freedom. The common good states that for there to be progress within a society there is the need for freedom. The common good states that pluralism does do not secure a good livelihood for Americans since there is no freedom where individuals have been liberated from a particular way of thinking. It is established that human beings are social beings whereby interaction is essential. In order for there to be proper interactions, there is need for education on the common good. Freedom is relevant in shaping individuals and the society.
Justice is a virtue that is emphasized by the catholic belief. This is because; it is essential in exercising good virtues within the society. The society has on the other hand failed to address the need for good virtues through pluralism. For there to be a peaceful co-existence with other members of the society, there is need to practice justice in the community at all costs. All persons are expected to ensure they practice justice; this is because it is a good moral value that is significant within the society. Justice is also essential in ensuring that all persons are equally treated regardless of their religious beliefs. Through ensuring there is justice, the common good is upheld. This is because it helps in preventing a lot of social injustices that could only have been made possible with a fight to stop inequality and discrimination of certain members within the society.
It is made clear that there are a lot of changes that need to be considered. However, education is a factor that should be steered since it is significant in ensuring students acquire the information that they need which is relevant in ensuring they maintain the common good and become good members of the society. Hollenbach tries to address the society stating that, the common good can only be enhanced through the provision of proper and essential education to students. This is because it will help them in becoming responsible citizen within the society. Through proper education, most individuals within the society will be able to acquire knowledge that does not have to be catholic based, but will be relevant in helping people within the society to maintain the common good. Through this, the society will reduce the social conflicts that are being witnessed.
