Immigration
Immigration is one of the most controversial issues and over the years, many scholars have focused on the different aspects of subject. My research paper will focus on the aspects of the reasons why people migrate and the impact that migration has in various countries. My article will be supported by information from various scholarly sources some of which I will critique in this essay. In this essay, I focus on three sources that I will probably use in my immigration paper. I will summarize and critique each of the three sources and also make a comparison of the sources.
Summary 1
“Empower educators to teach immigration” focuses on why there is a need to invest on training educators on how to teach the topic of immigration. In the article, the authors note that the importance of training teachers on how to teach the subject of immigration results to two specific benefits; increased knowledge and changed attitudes.
The article is authored by Sara Burnett, Eileen Gale Kugler and Claire Tesh; Burnett is an education associate in the American Immigration Council, Kugler is a consultant while Tesh is manager of Education at American immigration council (Burnett, Kugler & Tesh, 2015). The credentials of these authors reveal that they are not only reliable but also have authority to talk about the subject of immigration. Their authority to talk on the subject of immigration education is derived from the fact that the authors are knowledgeable about the subject on education. Moreover, two of the authors work with the American Immigration Council while the other is consultant on educations matters. The authors support their argument by using various facts, rhetorical strategies, documenting opposing arguments objectively and in the end convincing the reader on the argument they make.
Burnett, Kugler and Tesh (2015) note that the training by American Immigration Council results to the U.S Department of Justice together with U.S Department of education to warn schools against the violation of a child’s right to education. In my estimation, this fact shows the importance of immigration education in schools. The other fact that the authors use is in the results section of their argument; the results are derived from a survey conducted in schools on the importance of teaching immigration. Moreover, the authors use the rhetorical strategy of logos in form of inductive reasoning. The authors use inductive reasoning by presenting specific facts to the readers before arriving at a conclusion that is based on the facts presented. I think that I will incorporate this article on in paper because immigration is one of the primary reasons why people move to the U.S.
Summary 2
“Outmigration and State and Local Appropriations for Public Higher Education” focuses on the subject of outmigration and how it affects funding of higher education. In the end, the author indicates that outmigration has a negative effect on the funding of higher education.
Critique 2
The article is authored by Robert Dunn who is a lecturer at the Department of Economics and Business in Washington & Jefferson College. Given that the author specializes in economics and business, he has authority in the subject of funding when it comes to higher education. The author limits his focus on funding of higher education by looking at how outmigration affects the funding. The authors bases his arguments n various sources in combination with rhetorical strategies and facts.
