Male and Female Circumcision
Ethically speaking, the subject of circumcision remains a controversial topic. Throughout certain areas in the world, there is a high percentage of either male or female circumcision. Many people debate whether these practices are morally acceptable. In my opinion, I believe that female circumcision is a morally unacceptable practice. There are several reasons why I think this practice in unacceptable. First, the primary reason behind female circumcision is to prevent women from achieving pleasure from sexual intercourse. Second, female circumcision occurs when the female is a teenager and should be informed enough to make a decision about their health. Based on these arguments, I believe that this practice should be banned.
On the other hand, I think that male circumcision is a morally acceptable practice. I have several reasons why this practice should continue. First, the reason behind male circumcision is medical. Male circumcision is primarily done for hygienic purposes not sexual. Second, physicians perform this procedure when the infant is only a few days old, reducing the amount of pain experienced.
Societies circumcise their children according to cultural norms. It is interesting that the United States is one of the few “westernized” countries to perform this practice. Based on my opinions on the topic of circumcision, I believe that I am a soft universalist, and think that there are some morals that everyone should follow. I believe that one should be able to derive pleasure from sexual intercourse and not have their genitals altered to deny someone this right.
