Chapter 15
1. What are the 2 or 3 main points presented in the chapter that are most relevant to you?
There are several different methods for treatment that depend on the person and the drug that they’re addicted to. While rehabilitation centers can help almost anyone, treatments like Methadone can only people with heroin addiction.
2. What new concepts did you learn from the chapter that you did NOT know prior to reading the chapter and/or prior to this course?
I learned that the longer the treatment, the more effective it is. I also learned that more men than women seek treatment and that, since the average person in a treatment center are white males, women benefit from female only treatment centers.
3. Provide at least one (1) suggestion as to how you might be able to apply what you learned from chapter.
Addicts who need treatment might benefit from the combination of several types of treatment, such as in-patient treatment with medication, therapy and group therapy.
4. What question(s) has reading/reviewing the chapter contents raised for you?
I wonder if there are treatment centers that specialize in specific kinds of addiction, for example, a treatment center for alcoholism, a separate one for narcotics, or a treatment center just for heroin addicts.
Chapter 16
1. What are the 2 or 3 main points presented in the chapter that are most relevant to you?
Teenagers at risk of taking drugs come from stressful environments, low-income homes, and schools that have low expectations. DARE and “Just say ‘no” are the current social programs addressing teenage drug use.
2. What new concepts did you learn from the chapter that you did NOT know prior to reading the chapter and/or prior to this course?
Drug prevention changed from being about stopping the creation and distribution of drugs to preventing people, especially children and teenagers, from taking drugs.
3. Provide at least one (1) suggestion as to how you might be able to apply what you learned from chapter.
4. What question(s) has reading/reviewing the chapter contents raised for you?
If there is 1.7 billion dollars spent on drug programs, is anyone tracking how effective these expensive programs are?
