Over time as organizations diversify consequently, it also creates opportunities for the workplace problems to intensify. Often the main causes of these workplace problems are the inadequate flow of communication or poor organization structure. The paper is going to deal with the problem of lack of motivation to the employees (Crouse, 2005). Motivation in the work setting is the force that transforms intentions into real action. From the objective point of view, there are so many root causes that lead lack of motivation among the employees.
First is the lack of clear career vision, the majority of the employees always desire to have clear career objective and not only money. Having clear career objectives can be of great importance to employees in setting their long-term goals in such a way that they will work hard to achieve their projected outcomes. In addition, to the aspect of career visioning, there is a very big correlation that exists career visioning and the aspect of job security. Lacking clear career objective give a sense of job insecurity among the employees. It is the desire of all employee to have that feeling of a sense job security as well as longevity of their roles in the workplace.
Secondly is the feeling of being undervalued. It is more than obvious that an employee will start to lack energy as well as commitment to their work in a situation where their efforts are not being recognized or appreciated at all. It is always important to give credit where it is due for instance in celebrating success. Organizations should make efforts to make sure that achievements are in one way or another recognized.
The third factor is the lack of opportunities for development. Development opportunities specifically target the regular training to improve employee skills as well as expanding their body of knowledge. A work environment where everything seems stagnant, no progress, or any form of inspiration demoralizes the employees (Christensen, 2012). Provision of regular training and opportunities for development for employees can help significantly boost their morale. Feedbacks from the team also play a significant role to see where the training or the development opportunities would be most appreciated and be of the greatest value.
Motivation has always been associated with confidence. Confidence is perceived to enhance employee’s motivation. Employees who lack confidence feel unworthy and often has trouble in making right decisions. More over the employee will most likely not be in a position develop good working relationship with the other employees.
Achievement anxiety is also one other aspect to be blamed for the lack of motivation among the employees. Some of the employees have achievement anxiety. Such persons are so sensitive when it comes to being punished which might entail criticism. Such anxious employees may become less interested in some tasks as well as lose morale to perform some functions.
Poor leadership is the other factor that kills motivation of the employees. In every organization effective leadership is very significant when it comes to employee motivation. A leader who negatively affect the team outlook often leads to the loss of motivation. It is very important for the leader to be very flexible, inclusive, and, more importantly, to communicate effectively in such a way that he or she instills confidence and a sense of focus to the employees. Lack of motivation in most businesses has always been associated with the absence of good management.
Conflict is the other aspect that is very detrimental to businesses. Workplace intimidation and bullying has a great influence on an employee’s motivation. For instance, some of the employees might be worried to come out and reveal some of the issues about their fellow colleagues. Lastly, there is the aspect of increased unrealistic workload. Some of the employees are being overburdened by large unrealistic workloads which make them lose their motivation. Similarly, those employees whose workload is too light too might be tempted to lose interest quickly.
Motivational problems in businesses often result in performance issues that cost businesses billions of money in the form of losses annually. Based on organizational behavior perspective the problem of lack of employee motivation can be rectified in some ways.
First is the aspect of job assessment, and employees will feel motivated when they can work towards identifiable goals. Furthermore, the organization must ensure that they provide adequate feedback as well as performance expectations. Such aspects can boost morale as well as the productivity of the workforce. Secondly, to deal with the problem of worker feeling undervalued, management should provide the necessary assets for productivity as well as rewarding success. These aspects are very inspiring and motivate a lot.
Employees feel motivated in situations where the manager expresses genuine interests in whatever opinion that he or she has to say concerning the business. In such a situation the mental ownership of the company by the employee is increased which is boost morale and consequently better job performance.
The other most important aspect is the introduction of the reward system such as bonuses, rewards, monthly or annual recognition in the workplace raises employee’s morale. Such encouraged workers have raised motivation and hence increased productivity.
Leaders are mostly to be blamed for the lack of motivation among employees. It is important for the manager to have in mind that they cannot motivate every person but rather they should create conducive conditions where employees will be in a better position to motivate them. An effective leader creates conditions for increased productivity through high as well as the high challenge. Organizations should get rid of leaders who are only interested in maintaining their status than cultivating and providing support to their employees.
Organizations should also conduct regular training to employees. Regular training expand employee’s body of knowledge as well as their skills. Personality type training ensures that there is understanding in of each other’s preference that is knowing how to relate well with one another and consequently boosting morale, which transforms to positive influence.
We all need to be motivated in nearly all aspects of life. Motivation in business is very important in ensuring a happy as well as a productive organization (Pattison, 1979). Motivation in the workplace does not only involves working hard in the but rather goes beyond doing only just the prescribed duties. Motivation is very critical when it comes to aspects such as organizational productivity, quality service delivery and, more importantly, the essence of speed. In the situation where employees are less motivated, such aspects are to a greater extent affected. It is, therefore, necessary to have a motivated as well as a positive environment in the workplace this will ensure that employees remain motivated and enthusiastic.
