Mary Parker Follett in “The Giving of Orders” discusses about control and giving out orders. The issue of Control is of utmost importance in the domain of authority, power and leadership. There is no more the trend of giving out arbitrary orders to the subordinates. The best possible way to give orders is to ensure that the men who ought to carry them out do not feel compelled by the onus of the order. These people should rather be convinced by the orders and willingly execute them.

Thus, it is hardly productive to expect people to follow orders blindly. However, neither it is expected that the workers would pose hindrance to the orders issued based on their sense of subversion. Arbitrary orders also hamper self-reliance, self-respect of the people who are meant to execute them.
It is more useful if it can be made evident that the command is actually the paramount need of the situation. Thus, any sort of inconvenience and friction can be successfully avoided. Also, no order should be given out on a personal basis. Thus, depersonalized orders would do away with the allegation of tyrannical outlook of the administrators.
In cases of erroneous commands, the focus is on zeroing in on the shortcomings. Then these shortcomings are rectified so that the procedure of work can be carried out without any impediment in the future.
It is also very important to teach the techniques of the job to the people who would execute the orders. It is also helpful to provide specific reasons for giving out the orders. These steps make the process more favorable for the workers and the administrators as there remains least scope for any misunderstanding.
It should be kept in mind that the people who are to carry out the orders should be included in the picture and no order should be given from outside the domain of execution. The executives have to be trained in giving out the orders. The attitude with which the order would be executed has to be proper. Incentives for the workers involved can actually help in the execution of the orders. There should be ample opportunities to make the methods a habit.
Thus, business management is a very complex procedure which needs to be understood and then executed with propriety and skills. One needs to keep in mind the things which have been discussed if one wishes to make other people carry out the orders with utmost commitment.
