My name is Hussain; I am 22 years old living in Damman City, Saudi Arabia. I have four brothers and a sister. My brothers’ names include Ahmed, Aziz, Abdullah and Faisal. My sister is called Lulu. My father’s name is Mohammed while my mother’s name is Nora. When I was eight years old, my parents got divorced causing separations in the family. I have since been living with my father. It was a devastating event in our family because it led to separations among all of us. For instance, I left with my father leaving my brothers and sisters with my mother. It was depressing as all of us separated. It is difficult to reconnect with each other because of our situations, operations and schedules. For instance, I visit my mother with my sisters and brothers once in every three months.
The situation of separating with my family has had a great impact on my general association with my family members. There were a series of heartbreaks going away from my brothers and a whole family being separated. Having been separated from the family has made me loose part of me that in most cases I always feel will never be recovered. We as a family have lost a series of closeness that would have been different if we were to be raised together. It is always hard to reconnect even emotionally because we have spend a lot of time apart that it sometimes feel like strangers when we find time to come together. In general, it is hard to recover what we have generally lost as a family due to the divorce of my parents.
Divorce in our family was a depressing situation in the entire family. We were separated from each other. Firstly, there were separations in the family. Before the divorce, we were a happy family with events that promoted our existence. There was love in the family with a lot of joy and happiness. After my parents had divorced, we were left to choose between who to stay and who to leave. Since we were still young, the decision was mainly of our parents. It was depressing because we were still young and had to adapt to the situation before us.
I moved in with my father and had me separated from my other family members. It was depressing and came along many instances of withdrawals from my siblings and myself too. I kept thinking of them because we were once united, but had now separated. Additionally, my parents suffered the same because they had to adjust their schedules and operations to deal with us from different locations. Personally, I was withdrawn and felt isolated from the rest of the family. Despite my young age, I was used to seeing a great and happy family together all the time. After my parents divorced I felt awful and yearned for the a different situation in the future. I am now twenty-two years old, and I still feel the gap created in my life when my parents divorced. Divorce in our family was a drawback in the family in a number of ways. Firstly, we had to suffer isolation. Having been brought up in a family full of happiness and joy with togetherness, it was mandatory that our separation would have adverse effects. As we become of age, we start realizing the effects that the divorce had on our lives. My brothers together with my sister remained with my mother because they were still young, and she would better take care of them. Additionally, my father went with me because I was a little older and would survive appropriately with my father.
The divorce in my family had a significant influence on the total family budget. There was a significant increase in the expenses in the family. This separation was a drawback because money that would otherwise have been saved was spent on bringing up the two families. My father had to support himself and I as well as the other children. On the other hand, my mother had to take care of the brothers and sisters and check on with me all the time. The divorce had a psychological effect on our family. The separation caused us the happiness we were used to and took away our togetherness in the family. The most important part of a divorce is that I still get to visit my mother, brothers and my sister once in every three months. These visits are important because they rekindle the love, happiness and togetherness we were used to while we were together. They remind us of the importance of family and the existence of family members in our lives.
Initially, we suffered stereotypes, prejudice and stigmatization as people were trying to figure out the reason for the divorce. We were still young at the time of the divorce and did not fully understand the causes. Nonetheless, we were affected by the divorce and gradually started copying to the new situation. Initially, we had a rough time trying to figure out the causes and striving to understand the separation in the family. It was not easy because we still young and used to each other and could not understand why we were being separated. We also lacked acceptance at first because we simply could not come to terms with the new arrangements. Personally, I was devastated because I could comprehend the importance of being together in a family. At that age, the divorce changed my entire perception concerning marriage and family. At first I was indifferent to marriage and family because I constantly kept on thinking whether marriage and family were that important if they were not going to last.
However, the attitude changed with time and my siblings, and I developed a new attitude of acceptance. We gradually started accepting the situation and gradually developed importance of family togetherness. Family reunions and meetings have been elemental in our lives as a family. When we meet, there is always a new sense of love and acknowledgment of the presence of one another. We share new experiences and challenges facing us in life. The reunion, which happens once in every three months when I visit gives us the opportunity to share what we could not when were still together as a family. Despite the fact that we were still young, the effects are significant to our lives even in our youthful years. As a family, the divorce influenced our correlation, especially between my siblings and I. We have not been seeing each other for some time. Thus, we have continually lacked the full opportunity to see the development of each one of us. My parents also lack the chance to witness our development, and that has affected the influence of their counsel on us. For instance, in case of a correction, their ideas cannot be wholly effective because they have not been in a position to watch our development and progress in life fully. Despite being a devastating, depressing and withdrawing event in our family, we remain strong for one another and share our challenges and achievements whenever we get the opportunity. We laugh together during my visits and ensure that all of us are fine. The divorce between my parents was a significant event in our family because it totally changed our orientation and overall well-being and activities.
