I have gained valuable insights on the structure and politics of the USA government. I believe that I know more than I had before taking the course. For example, I understand comprehensively the role of the executive branch of the governments especially concerning foreign relations, law enforcements, processes of appointments of federal officers, and the interrelationship between the arms of the governments. The government also creates regulation of various economic sectors like the monetary policy to keep the economy of the nation stable.
It was interesting to learn the relationship between the legislative branch, and the judicial service. The process of making laws is complicated, and so is its interpretation. The Congress makes laws, but the ultimate legal interpretation is the role of the judicial arm especially the Supreme Court. Moreover, the election process was exciting because of how elaborate it is, and the procedures one has to undergo before securing a nomination for the presidency. One may think that it is a simple thing, but there are many legislative hurdles that a candidate must fulfill, and abide by throughout the campaign period.
The process of making laws is quite long and many bills “die in the committee” stage upon the inaction of the relevant committees. For a bill to die in the committee stage, it implies that if fails to meet the minimum criteria of formulating laws by either being covered by existing legislation or technically not applicable in the US. Moreover, although there is an elaborate procedure for impeaching a sitting president, there has never been a successful impeachment of any president in the USA.
Yes, the course on American government is essential for all college students. It offers them an in-depth understanding of how the arms of government work, their limitations, and the role of the USA in the global perceptive. It is important for every citizen to understand the role of the government and how they can participate in the state processes especially in the course of making laws.
