The film shows various aspects of And Goldsworthy’s art or process. The materials that Goldsworthy uses in his art process have been referred to throughout the film. The materials include leaves, icicles, stones, colored flowers, thorns, twigs and snow. From the film, we can tell of the perception of Goldsworthy regarding the materials that form his art process. His art is inspired by the environment. It is because of this reason that he works with nature in its entirety. Part of his art process as depicted in the film is the tools that he uses. When he is working on ephemeral pieces of art, the art guru employs his bare hands exclusively.
The importance of materials in the art process stands out as one of the aspects that link Andy Goldsworthy to the other artists that we have reviewed in class. The materials used during the art process influence the process to a great extent. Materials influence and enhance ones creative process. When materials are specified for the artist, one is restricted. However, the art process that Andy Goldsworthy undergoes helps one understand his art. It also helps one open up the mind to fathom things that are beyond the apparent. For instance, Goldsworthy has his way with the materials he finds in nature turning them into beautiful arrangements.
The human eye egg forms also serve to tickle the artistic marvel embodies in his products. These aspects have a very significant effect on ones psychological state. For instance, Goldsworthy argues that art needs no explanation based on the fact that everyone has performed art in one way or another. Art being the expression on one’s feeling in an amusing and extraordinary way is common based in this concept. Additionally, one can see that Goldsworthy art is not only an expression of his creativity, but also a message about the things he holds dear, the environment.
Art is an expression of one’s and those of the environment around him in an aesthetic manner that is beyond the ordinary. The artistic process is more often than not a creative process in which an artist’s perception of matters is presented in an amusing way using the materials at this disposal, and more so those materials that inspired his creativity. The creation of art to specifications, up to and including the use of specific materials has very dire implications of the creative process and consequentially on the products. Creating art to specifications makes art complicated ant at times incomprehensible. This is because it does not reflect the simplicity of terms as they are depicted in the world.
The use of specific materials also interferes with the creative process involved in art. It amounts to placing impediments in the form of restrictions on the part towards creative artistry. As seen in the film, Goldsworthy wanders the riverbanks and woods, free of any restrictions, sourcing for materials and playfully weaving, piling and fitting them together in beautiful arrangements. It is because of this reason that his artwork needs no explanation as it was created in utter freedom from specifications and restrictions. Nonetheless, restrictions are not always detrimental to art making. Restrictions do not necessarily have a negative effect on the artist. At times, they inspire the artist to think beyond that which is apparent, thereby pioneering new artistic realms.
The different forms of land art in the film are not only enlightening but also build perspective. From these forms of land art, I am able to appreciate things that were not apparent. This form of artwork helps me look beyond what is apparent to appreciate that which can be from things that many may not consider significant. Additionally, I am able to look at the environment from a different perspective. Goldsworthy is an artist who works with this own hands using material that he can find in the environment. This has drawn attention to the environment in terms of the beauty that lies in it.
The different land forms conjure feelings of beauty and harmony. For instance, his floral arrangement to mimic a lit path shows the relationship of different things in what is apparently the chaos and congestion of the city. Nonetheless, the art teaches that even in that congestion and chaos, one can find harmony and beauty. The different forms of land art in the film resonate positively within me because then not only enlighten but also draw attention to relevant things within the society and the environment.
Every artist hopes for the opportunity to convey messages through his artwork. While there are many media, land forms seem to evoke grand emotions. If I were commissioned to develop a land form as a piece art, I would develop an island choking from plastics in the middle of the beach. The sands in the beach would signify the vast oceans and the island filled with plastics to mimic the earth. This is because the globe has become a dumpsite for plastics among other nonbiodegredable material. The pollution will catch up with is in time, and I feel it is our responsibility to enforce the ideals of corporate social responsibility and environmental mindfulness in our activities.
