- Can you tell me something about yourself?
I majored in biology in a Chinese university. After I came to America, I decided to change my major into business finance. I would use my summer holiday as a time to be able to work through internships with trading companies. I have found that the school does not have the means to teach me all of the information that is necessary for success within this field. However, it is able to lay out a guideline and help us to understand the theoretical knowledge. The best way to get involved in better understanding the different aspects of my major would be to practice, in companies, whenever possible. I worked in a trading company, which is located in northeast China. I have learned so many things that I didn't know before. One of the best examples of this is that I keep close connection with my clients, because I need to quickly understand their needs and requirements. Then I utilize the information and tools that I had learned to assist in making the manufacturers completely understand about what they will provide to clients. There are other lessons I have learned, but I think customer service is the most important aspect and is best learned, during on-the-job experience.
In find that by knowing the company, I am able to better suit the company’s needs. I tend to make it a priority to thoroughly research all the information that I can find to be able to know ahead of time what exactly the company expectations are.
- What is your greatest weakness?
I think that one of the most influential weaknesses within the business is language barriers. I found that even with learning English, in China, I had a hard time understanding people or speaking to people, when I first moved to America. I have just recently started making real improvements on my English communication skills, even though in China I was one of the top students in the course. I do have some problems that are due to my accent, but I am confident that I can continue to improve my skills and am able to hold conversations with others. While I do consider my accent as part of the language barrier, I know that it will not be able to stop me from meeting the goals that I have set for myself. I know that I will overcome this weakness, completely, very soon.
This question can be very hard for many people, because nobody ever truly wants to be able to accept that they have a weakness, but when the weakness is language based, it does make it more apparent than it being a problem with attention or nervousness. Those can be masked while at work, better than no being able to understand the boss or instructor, clearly.
