In my case, the attribute that has been conspicuously passed on to me by my mother is impatience. My uncles often tell me that even as a baby, I was one of the most impatient ones. I wanted to milk as soon as I demanded it. I wanted someone’s lap as soon as I needed it. I sought a toy as soon as I remembered it. Usually, children are of this sort. They start crying as soon as they are not paid attention to or are not needed to. However, my uncles say that I was different. They saw the impatience in my eyes. One of my uncles even jokes about it and says, “It was like you were threatening us with your eyes saying ‘Wait till I learn how to walk!’.”
While this impatience had been injected into me by nature, it was further nurtured when I saw a live demonstration from my mother every single day. Obviously in my childhood days, I never realized that I was gradually and subconsciously being trained to be like her. However, as I grew up, I began to be impatient with everything. I do not refer to impatience in a negative manner. It somehow also brought the best out of me. I was impatient to do my homework. However, once I began to do it, I did it with the utmost thoroughness and perfection. Impatience led me to finish all my tasks well before time, just what I had learned from my mother. I had often seen her admonishing others for leaving tasks to the last minute. She said that the more we procrastinate, the more we become vulnerable. She had a perfect solution to this vulnerability: impatience, and so do I.
Being impatient with others may be understandable. However, I also become impatient with myself. I get frustrated when I fail to successfully complete a task within time. I want everything done as and when I have planned it in my mind. Any violation of the quality standard or the timeline in my head leads to severe frustration. This is where the negative effect of impatience comes in because it has been causing aggression issues in my personality. Usually, people resort to psychologists to identify what are the reasons for issues in personality. I identified my issue myself. I also know that impatience is now deeply embedded in my being. I may make efforts to reduce it to a certain extent, but the time to completely eliminate it has passed.
While my impatience may be causing some problems for me, I have seen my mother managing perfectly well despite this attribute. This means that even I can use it to my best advantage. I just need to have a command over this characteristic and utilize it as a strength, rather than consider it a weakness.
