Certainly, it is noticeable that the perception of the public towards media, some journalists’ attitude towards work, and media itself has drastically changed. This did not happen when Donald Trump officially became the President of the United States – it all started from the time he decided to run in opposition to Hillary Clinton, who was thought to have more popularity rate than Trump. Since then, the president-elect became very antagonistic to American journalism to a point of deciding to strengthen libel laws.
Four journalists have different opinions regarding media in the age of Trump. Cooper pushes for togetherness despite network wars. The press should work together and stand firm against ruthless and repressive leaders. Reed presses for whistleblowers to stay anonymous and reporters should be committed to confidentiality. Chittum argues that the media could just be overreacting at Trump, while Garfield defends journalists from accusations of being biased. Each of the journalists has a point. Three of them – Cooper, Reed, and Garfield made strong points at defending the media, but it was Chittum who made a better point at admitting the fact that at some point, journalists have overreacted at anything Trump and his supporters say or do.
The journalist points out that many journalists have not kept an open mind about trying to understand or getting to know Trump’s supporters. Often, group or shared views via the social media create a generic reaction to issues related to Trump and they would relate the actions of the president-elect with the supporters. That is why the nation is now divided – the media has somehow sensationalized Trump-related events. On the other hand, it is already a given fact that Trump distorts facts, deceives, tell lies However, this should not be the only angle of the story. There are so many angles that the media can show. It is high time the media also shows the side of Trump supporters if they so strongly deny being biased.
