Interests, Abilities and Values
Interests
My native country is China. I came here as an international student majoring in the field of Finance.
Dance - My interests include dancing, having received training in Chine folk dance as part of my undergraduate curriculum. I am currently very interested in learning Latin dance and New Jazz, both of which I have learned while studying at the university. I have participated in a couple of dance performances at the university as well.
Abilities
I believe that my capabilities include the ability to self-manage/self-motivate and the ability to adapt to changing or new environments.
Self-Management - A very good example of how I demonstrate these capabilities happened two months ago when I worked as an intern for an Internet company, which is in the business of doing APPs in Shenzhen. Shenzhen is not my hometown. As a result I had been able to successful work as a marketing assistant in the marketing department working on offline channels. I have also gained a lot of friends in my short working experience as an intern.
Adaptation - Forming friendships and being able to work effectively in a new environment demonstrates my capabilities of self managing and adapting.
Values
The values that I have are my keen sense of responsibility, my honesty and my fierce loyalty to the values I believe in.
Sense of Responsibility - As an international student, the sense of responsibility is critical to ensure that I carry on with my schoolwork to the best of my abilities. This also means that I would not get distracted with the non-academic activities that are popular around the university campus. A keen sense of responsibility also means that I will be able to complete my university education on the way to fulfilling my life goals and career objectives. In addition to become a successful graduate of Finance, I see myself a valuable contributor to society and a better, productive and proud citizen of my country.
Honesty - Another value I believe in is honesty. As they say, honesty is the best policy. In my case I think that being an honest person makes it easy for me to adapt to my surroundings. For instance, by being honest, I am able to understand my weaknesses and strengths and I am more capable of assessing my situation. I also am able to foster good relationships with people because as an honest person, I would be able to tell them the things that they should know to better perform in a work or social setting.
Loyalty - The last personal value I believe in is my loyalty. I am a very loyal person. I am loyal first and foremost to the values I believe in. I am loyal to my country and the goals of my country. I am loyal to my parents and their teachings. I am loyal to my convictions and myself. I am loyal to my friends as well, believing that a true friend is someone that will be there to support when times get difficult. I am loyal to my values and I believe in trying to adhere to my values as best as I could to survive and thrive in this world. A good example of my loyalty is when I backed-up a workmate for doing something that she thinks is right. In this instance, my officemate, who was handling an account for a major client, was asked to manage an assignment that was different from the initial assignment instructed by our superior. However, because of the requirement of the client, my officemate decided to modify the original instruction to ensure that the work needed by the client was completed. Upon hearing this, our superior got mad at the deviation from the original instructions. Because of the temper of my boss, I had to help my officemate defend her point to our superior, adding that her actions helped complete the task. Upon hearing this, our superior decided to review the circumstances and finally approve my officemate’s actions. My loyalty and belief in her helped her get through the trial.
This self-assessment clearly underscores how my capabilities and values are tied together. I am a highly capable person, having the ability of managing myself and adapting to situations. I am able to do so because of the values that I believe in. I will be successful because my capabilities and values go hand-in-hand. I know that any organization that would provide me gainful employment would find my values and capabilities useful, as it is the same type of capabilities and values that make organizations successful.
