I agree with the correlation between poverty and education success though it does not only affect the African Americans, but also other different races all over the world. However, for this case, it only concentrates on African Americans who are the point of discussion. Poverty among the majority of African American family settings is a major contributor to the lack of educational achievement. With the many obligations and responsibilities, family bread-winners with a minimum wage job struggle raising tuition money and at the same time meet other basic needs. Children, especially the older ones are thus forced by circumstance to leave school and discover ways to fend for and complement their poor families’ earnings. That proves a great relationship between poverty and lack of educational success as these students opt for jobs to earn a living and help their parents.
For example, research in African American dominated states has shown that for every 70% of students graduating from high school, only 10% succeed in reaching centers of higher learning. All this despite the majority having the will to further their studies. The research also shows that for the 70% of students graduating annually from high schools, 68% of them are from foster care. If these children had the monetary ability to meet tuition fees and other expenses, they would further their education. The situation also the same for other races.
Comment
Part 1
I agree that the issue of poverty’s influence on educational success does not affect African Americans only, but also affects other races. Raising funds for tuition fee among other expenses including food, house rent, water, electricity bills among others is a huge load on bread-winners. It is true that these families will look for other means to meet these needs. They opt to drop school and use the little funds for other basic needs.
Part 2
I echo the statement made. Poverty is directly proportional to education success. Indeed civil liberties have seen African Americans enjoy equal opportunities with other cultures, but due to its existence from a long time ago, catching up has been difficult. African Americans have decades more if not centuries to truly be on the same ground as the Caucasians. Regardless, fighting poverty will ensure a higher likelihood of African Americans going further in their studies.
