Management: Comparing and contrasting profiles
Introduction
For the comparison of the two different employee profiles the case of Marc Morial, a President and CEO of National Urban League, and the case of Lisa Dardy McGee, a National Parks and Forests Program Director at Wyoming Outdoor Council, were chosen. My goal was to study and analyze the main duties, responsibilities and daily operations performed by each of the two employees, and as the result, to identify and illustrate their most vivid similarities and differences. These candidates were selected due to their age and gender difference, the educational resemblance and the distinction within their levels of subordination.
Position Summaries
Marc Morial is responsible for making the company running by setting the correct direction of the team. He needs to make sure that “more than one hundred local affiliates provide direct quality services to more than two million people through programs, advocacy and research” (Cryer, 2008), while there are only 6 people reporting to him directly. Marc most financial duty is to oversee fundraising, at the same time, he inspects the quality of work of Human Resources Department with his final word for the candidate, conducts the control of the ongoing public communications, and manages the affiliate’s national network performance. His role is to provide the necessary resources for the company to be able to help its clients, while he has to provide the team with a plan on how to do that; which requires meeting’s arrangement with corporate CEOs as well as with senior team members, giving public speeches, spending much time on written and oral getting through in order to reach the needed leader of the field. In order to keep the progress, the CEO needs to be an example to others, “make your voice heard. And listen to.” (Cryer, 2008).
Program Director
Lisa Dardy works with the issues related to national parks and forests within her state area. Her main duties are: conducting the research of the current situation and evaluation of the existing or potential hazards; preparation of the corresponding reports; development of the appropriate strategy, by which the detected risks can be eliminated; expansion of the awareness, as well as the empowered individual’s attention attraction to the problem; management of the programmed budget in order to direct the necessary funds to the most urgent projects’ needs. Lisa’s role is to identify the problem and resolve it by finding the necessary recourses and by involving the right people, that is why on a daily basis she may be working on administrative tasks, meeting with partner organizations and elected officials, supporting the communication flow by drafting press releases and answering the incoming requests.
Position Similarities
Both of the positions require essential background in the field of performance, moreover, a specific legal education is necessary in order for the correct decisions to be made. The positions need the decision making, problem solving, analytical and communicational skills to be well developed and constantly performed. Both jobs include communication with higher standing representatives on a daily basis and require a certain ability to persuade others. Business travels are vital for these jobs. The main reason to do what they are doing is identified as carrying for others, while being proud of contribution to the society they make.
Position Differences
While Marc’s company works for the direct benefit of the coming customers, Lisa struggles for the sake of nature, an inanimate object. For Marc work mostly takes place within the building, but Lisa has to go outside and spend the majority of her working hours outdoor. The projects life cycles differ dramatically: Marc is able to see the results of his work within the nearest future; however, Lisa may not even witness the outcome of her efforts applied in terms of her goals. In a direct comparison Lisa’s job position is lower than Marc’s. Meanwhile, Marc’s actions start from listening to the problem (or receiving the report), which was previously identified by one of his employees, then he develops an action plan, and after that he performs his role in order to make it happen. Unlike CEO, Lisa knows the origin: she starts from discovering the problem, then she creates a report about it and offers an action plan, while she has her own action plan to make it happen.
Conclusion
For this assignment the two different nonprofit positions were analyzed. While the obvious job differences were assumed from the very beginning, the paper shows the list of important similarities between the employee’s duties and responsibilities. After completing this assignment I have come to a conclusion that the most important factors for working at nonprofit organization are: the ability to identify the problem and provide the solution to it, the knowledge of your field, the power of persuasion, and for sure, the passion for what you do and a strong commitment to change the world for good.
