In the nursing profession change in curriculum change is a constant requirement. The changes in health care sector have overwhelmed the service providers, consumers and insurance companies due to their sheer pace, magnitude and intensity. Reforms in the health care sector has affected the nursing profession and nurse educators have to constantly revise and up-date the curriculum to prepare and equip the nurse practitioners with relevant skills and knowledge. This helps the nurses to manage the challenges encountered at the work place.
Curriculum must broadly cover topics which include global trends related to nursing, advances in technology and science, professional priorities, social context, academic forces among others. The curriculum should impart the attitudes required for effective patient care in nursing practice and address the challenges presented in the modern health care system. There are complex issues which externally influence nursing profession and these include climate change, bio-terrorism, economic recession, domestic violence, present day infections, demographic trends, political environment, societal pressures, drug-resistant micro organisms among others(Billings & Halstead,2012).
Nurses are ethically and legally responsible for reporting cases related to domestic violence. Domestic violence or abuse occurs in different forms and some forms can be easily identified. Domestic violence is the prime cause of serious injury to women. The common signs include subdural hematomas, rib fractures, black eyes, bruises on neck or wrists, deep cuts on the lips or eyes, broken ear drums, ruptured mandibles ,skin ulcers, poor hygiene, malnutrition among others. In many instances the victims of domestic violence try to hide the injuries using make up and they may not satisfactorily explain the occurrence of injuries to the nurse. Nurses should spot domestic violence using subjective impressions of victims and objective signs.
Nurses must incorporate low-key questioning during screening of suspected victims since many of them do not answer direct questions related to the abuse. Nurses should be calm, unemotional and display nonjudgmental out look when talking with victims. Then the victims are likely to reveal all the facts. After the nurse has confirmed the incident of domestic violence, the appropriate authorities must be informed by the nurse about it. The scope related to reporting incidents of domestic violence is not restricted to patients alone, but encompasses the entire environment related to health care. A nurse can easily identify the warning signs associated with domestic violence. By reporting the matter and alerting the concerned authorities, lives can be saved(Montgomery,2017).
