Project Proposal: Photo-Roman
The proposed project will be based on the old people living in the Swiss city Lugano and the Italian fishing village Portofino. The story regards the old people who settle in those two areas. The reasons why they like these places will be told through a photo-roman. The central theme of the story will be how people can make their old age more fruitful by choosing to settle in scenic places like Lugano and Portofino. Photo-roman will be based on the images of older people living in these two places taken by me personally. Characters that form part of the photo-roman would speak through speech bubbles and thought balloons. In order to make the story lively, all the pictures will be taken outdoors. Pictures of old people will be taken in the natural surroundings – when they are walking on the streets of streets of Lugano or sitting by the lakesides in Portofino. Since photos are taken outdoors, adequate lighting would be available during the day times. In cases, when there is any need to take pictures during evenings or late in the nights, places with some artificial light like street lights will be chosen. Use of appropriated images will be minimal. As I will be visiting these places personally, any required images regarding the surroundings will be taken by me. While every care would be taken to present images as they were shot, they will be subject to some minimal digital manipulation to better some effects like silhouetting.
Capturing images in actual settings where the story unfolds will make them better depict reality they are supposed to uncover. Original photographs taken in the natural settings add to their visual accuracy and thereby explore the idea of ‘truth’ in a better way.
