The word personal responsibility has often been used to mean an individual’s self-awareness towards the success of his or her life. In addition, personal responsibility refers to act by which an individual sticks to his or her life-long goals that they seek to achieve. In line with this, personal responsibility guides a person to structure his or her life activities in such a way that it ensures mutual progress (Ellis, 2010). Evidently, the topic on personal responsibility occurs as one of the topics that have evolved into debatable topics across various parts of the world. This is because the concept of personal responsibility has been defined differently. Precisely, various individuals have devised their own distinct definitions on the concept of personal responsibility. This paper limits itself to discussing the definition of personal responsibility, its relationship with college success, preliminary plan to practice it in my education, and plans to merge effective strategies for success as a student.
Discussion
Based on a personal opinion, personal responsibility refers to the ability of an individual to develop an interesting liking for something and design the adequate ways to attaining the same. To be precise, personal responsibility occurs in cases whereby someone has something or someone that he or she adores; hence, take it upon themselves to care and take care of such things or someone. Many at times, personal responsibility is evident when an individual lives a life that is guided by the need to ensure that they take care and remain true to their personal goals and aspirations. An analysis of the definitions of personal responsibility as devised by various scholars gives the notion that personal responsibility aims at showcasing an individual’s accountability to different concerns in their lives (Brown, 2009).
Certainly, personal responsibility is a life-long facet that plays an important role in the life of any person. It is essential to note that life is often interesting; filled with challenges and opportunities in equal magnitude. Personal responsibility comes in handy in various life situations in that it guides one’s character and personality in such a way that it enhances attainment of the set desires. Personal responsibility makes a person to work on their personality and character in order to avoid blaming others for the misfortunes that may befall them. In addition, personal responsibility makes someone realize the successes that are realized as a result of a high level of personal responsibility. Overall, personal responsibility makes someone accountable for both the successes and misfortunes that may occur in life (Ellis, 2010).
On another note, personal responsibility may refer to situations where someone chooses to live a purposive life that respects the values and moral standards set by the society (Young, 2012). Therefore, personal responsibility does not occur in isolation nor spontaneously. Instead, personal responsibility happens in a mutual way whereby it begins to develop from an individual’s inner self. Thereafter, it develops gradually to the outer self of an individual. This means that personal responsibility is something that occurs progressively. For this reason, personal responsibility makes people understand the deeper meaning of different issues in life. In fact, it makes people understand that the choices they make can be beneficial or harmful to humanity. This analysis shows that personal responsibility comes with its teachings, especially teachings on independence. As a result, personal responsibility happens in cases where we accept to live to the standards that are acceptable to everyone in society.
There is various reason that confirm the notions that personal responsibility has a positive co-relation to college success. This is accredited to the fact that a high sense of personal responsibility provides an ample platform that allows college students to succeed in their college endeavours. One of the primary reasons as to why personal responsibility increases the chances of college success is the fact that it allows students to make conscious decisions, especially on educational matters (Ellis, 2010). For example, personal responsibility guides college students to develop adequate skills on time management. Therefore, college students with a high sense of personal responsibility are more likely to make adequate choices on time management, which enhances their college success.
In addition, personal responsibility makes college students accountable to the personal goals and objectives set by students upon joining college. In most cases, these goals focus on the need to excel on various academic matters. In line with this, personal responsibility ensure that students remain true to such personal goals. This directly results in the success of college students. On another note, personal responsibility is incorporated with self-control. Therefore, personally responsible college students take full control of their college matters. To be precise, such students will carry out the assigned tasks and hand them timely to their professors for grading. Overall, personally responsible students are self-discipline (Brown, 2009). For this reason, these students co-exist peacefully with fellow students, as well as their professors. This analysis shows that indeed personal responsibility and college success are related.
Preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility in your education
Personal responsibility is pivotal in my education. For this reason, I have developed a preliminary plan that will guide me to becoming a personally responsible individual. The plan will have various aspects. Above all, the plan will focus on the need for me to respect the advice from my superiors. In line with this, I will listen to advice from my parents and teachers. This will be beneficial for me because it will ensure that I get sound advice from my superiors, which will enable me to make sound decisions (Young, 2012). In addition, my plan will factor in the need to avoid excuses. I will always complete my assignments even in cases where the assignments are difficult, I will attempt them and do corrections later with the teacher.
Plan to incorporate effective strategies for success as a student
There are various strategies that I will incorporate in my plan in order to succeed as a student. The first strategy that I will incorporate is to review my goals. This will ensure that I improve progressively on my educational matters. Secondly, I will develop a personal timetable, which will enable me to manage time well. This is valuable because it will guide me to complete and deliver the assigned tasks in a timely manner. Finally, I will always seek to prepare and complete class assignments individually; without copying or plagiarizing other students work. This shows my personal commitment to my education, which will contribute to my success in college (Ellis, 2010).
Conclusion
In conclusion, personal responsibility is a crucial facet for individual success at various contexts. Evidently, personal responsibility occurs gradually and calls for an individual’s commitment. On a similar note, success amongst college students is determined highly by the level of personal responsibility amongst students. In fact, personal responsibility has a direct influence on the college success of students.
