The Scotland play is a dramatization of political effects and corrosive psychological effects that sprout out in fulfilling power’s ambition. The tragedy tells the story of Macbeth, a brave Scottish soldier, which meets three witches and prophesy he will be King of Scotland. Ambition consumes him to the extent that results to his murder of King Duncan thus he grabs the throne. He ends up becoming a tyrannical ruler due to the paranoia and guilt thus committing more murders in protecting himself from suspicion and enmity. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth end up in realms of madness, death and arrogance with the civil war and bloodbath.
The Seafarer by Conor McPherson
While alcohol may be a great leveler, the men in the play through a style that is spectacular present it as a great individualized. Through the alcohol, each seems to present the issues that matter and are affecting their lives. After a few drinks, Ivan notifies friends that he has issues with his wife. Nicky and Sharky confront each other over a girl when drunk; Lockhart demands to play Sharky over a soul bet when they are drunk. The part where Lockhart, the devil plays Sharky, it is a confirmation of how a privilege it is for one to be human. The devil should not win as God would not allow.
Lockhart wants Sharky’s soul. In addition, he wishes to make him suffer by getting him to hell where it is dark and miserable. Sharky the Protagonist views that he is about to settle a debt with the devil as he had set him free previously which an exact opposite of what McPherson considers the devil. According to the writer, Lockhart is all wrong. He is out here to make Sharky’s life miserable, and he does it in a way that the other four men in the room do not comprehend what is happening. He is cunning.
McPherson makes multiple references to light, dark, sight and blindness in the play. These words are adopted to bring about the religious aspect. McPherson is a Catholic believer and thus adopts that in the play. The blind or those in the dark are yet to see the light through religion. It is the light that should rescue them and deliver them to heaven. The blind Richard has a dream in which he sees a fly and visualizes life as precious. He only wakes up to realize it was only a dream. That is a challenge that he poses to Ivan and Sharky, who can see clearly.
Categorically, the meaning of a seafarer is an individual who travels or works on a ship or boat on the sea. There are challenges in working in the sea. For the play, titling it as The Seafarer is symbolic. Sharky is the seafarer viewing him from his struggles. He has been in jail and attained freedom through a bet. He is a drunkard, he has recently lost his job, he is accused of murder, and he has lost his girlfriend to Nicky and now has the devil playing for his sole.
