Shazam is a smartphone application that is used for music identification. It is owned by a company based in a British company whose headquarters are in England, London. The application uses microphones in-built in smartphones to detect a brief sample of any music (Proulx & Shepatin, 2012). The application compares the sample it has collected to a music data base to give the user information on the music such as the artist, album and song title. With Shazam, one does not have to wonder about specific music information when they hear music anywhere be it on TV or the radio (LeVitus, 2008). The application compliments Facebook’s image, its brand and the company in general.
The Shazam technology can pose a danger to public safety due to the wide range the application is exposed to. The music ID app has become somewhat like an eavesdropping device due to its new update that allows the software to pick up of audio information constantly. Therefore, the company is exposed to a lot of personal information that could be threatening to the public’s safety. Furthermore, the app may encourage drivers to use cellphones while driving thus resulting to a rise in road accidents. Another dangerous scenario is handing ones cellphone to use the application while cooking or handling a machinery. Shazam being an exciting app that distracts people during delicate situation. The excitement that comes with the application may lead to accidents such a kitchen and industry accidents. These accidents are due to the distractions that emerge from constantly using the Shazam app.
However, the application has proven to be safe for the public by giving its users the opportunity to retrace their steps through its continuous audio identification capability. People feel safe because they need not worry about problems like forgetting to turn off electric appliances because Shazam records all sounds all the time.
When people discover the information about a certain song they share it with their friends on Facebook (Hahn, 2013). The social network users tagged their friends about the name of the song they like and the information on how to find the song online. Through this sharing, the company’s image is enhanced by adding another function to the social network. Through its close link to Facebook, users can simply click on to share any information from Shazam to their friends on Facebook. The additional capability gives Facebook users the perception that the social network is a multifunctional channel of communication thus improving the image of the company.
The application also uses certain terms like tagging that is popularly used by Facebook users. Shazam allows its users to tag the music they discover and Twit or play them on Youtube. The use of the term tag improves on the image of Facebook by creating a form of association between the famous Shazam app and the social network. When people continuously use the same words to describe certain aspects of Shazam and Facebook, this makes both companies more popular.
Facebook is a social network company that allows people to communicate with each other about various aspects of their lives. The majority of Facebook users are young people who are very excited about music. Shazam gives them an opportunity to search for information about music that they like. Although the application is very useful when it comes to providing information about music, it fails to give its users the opportunity to share this information with friends and family. Facebook becomes relevant by enabling Shazam users to communicate music discoveries with their friends. Through this application, Facebook’s brand is enhanced as the social site becomes important for sharing music in addition to being a communication channel.
Furthermore, Shazam is a popular application that has dominated the sector of mobile applications. Therefore, any company with any association or links to Shazam benefits from its popularity. The application has been associated to companies such as YouTube, iTunes, iPod and the iPhone thus giving these technologies the benefits associated with its popularity (Thorson & Duffy, 2012). Thus, Facebook’s link to Shazam gives it the positive publicity associated with the application’s good image. This association improves on the social site’s brand. Continuous linkage to Shazam’s will contribute to the enhancement of Facebook’s brand because of its common popularity among the sites majority users.
The Shazam app has provided Facebook with great ideas to enhance its Android and iOS application. The social site’s application has similar audio identification characteristics to Shazam app. The Facebook application collects and identify music or shows playing on the background when users update their status. The adaptation of the technology by the social site has improved it data collection purposes thus making it a better advertiser (Hutchison, 2008). The improvement in advertising enables the company to enhance its ads campaign. Furthermore, the Shazam-like application by Facebook is beneficial for its investors because the most specific its advertising platform is, the more clients it will get. Adopting a similar technology as Shazam will, therefore, be beneficial to Facebook as a company.
Shazam’s association with Facebook through the connect link it enables Shazam users to share their music discoveries with their friends. This association brings together two major companies to create a new function for their users. The additional function is likely to increase the number of users for both companies. If the two companies continue to work together, they could identifies more areas that need improvements in their technologies. More innovation would lead to a partnership that is profitable to both companies. In this way, Shazam has contributed to the improvement of Facebook by adding to its customers and ultimately to its revenue.
In conclusion, Facebook has been a successful venture in the industry of social media. It success has been partly attributed to its continuous innovative ideas. Shazam offers Facebook to improve on its innovations by associating the social site with its audio recognition technology. Through this association, Facebook has experience improvements in its image, brand and the company as a whole.
