The bond of sisterhood is very important and it forms very strong ties. When two women decide to help each other out, there is mutual trust between them and the thought of betrayal does not cross anyone’s mind. In this essay we will look at three different novels showing the strong sisterhood bond that exists between the different female characters. The three novels include a poem, a tale and a film. The three are Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti, Bluebeard by Charles Perrault and Diabolique by Henri George Clouzot respectively.
In Goblin Market the strong bond of sisterhood is felt when Lizzie decides to go to the river to meet up with the goblins and buy fruit from them to help her sister Laura who is dying. The goblins are not happy and they assault her, but she bravely goes home with her fruit drenched dress to try to help her sister to drink from her dress. The following day Laura becomes well thanks to her sister Lizzie. In this poem we see a deep love existing between the two sisters.
In the story of the Bluebeard, the strong bond of sisterhood is seen when Anne sticks to her sister the wife of Bluebeard and does not leave her alone in her moment of need. Bluebeard wants to kill his wife because she has discovered his secret of killing his previous wives. The two sisters lock themselves in a very high tower as they wait for their brothers to save them. Bluebeard is killed by his wife’s brother and she inherits all his fortune. She demonstrates sisterhood by sharing her wealth and marrying off her sister Anne. Sisterhood in this story is shown by the unity among the sisters.
In the film Diabolique, there is a strong sisterhood bond that enables the two women, Christina and Nicole, to carry out a murder plan against Christina’s husband Michel. Nicole is the mistress of Michel and in the film he abuses both of them. Hatred is spurned from this abuse, hence the plot to kill him. Christina is too trusting and does not think for one moment that Nicole could be playing her. In this film, Nicole takes advantage of the strong bond of sisterhood and tricks Christina into believing her. All along, the plan is between Michel and Nicole to kill Christina and take her fortune. Michel dresses like a ghost and scares Christina to death through a heart attack. In this novel, the strong bond of sisterhood is abused by Nicole through manipulation of Christina.
Conclusion
Sisterhood is a very strong bond that exists between women. We can see both Lizzie and Anne putting themselves at risk for the sake of their sisters. They do these acts with hearts full of love for their sisters. Christina on the other hand has a great respect for the women folk and is willing to go ahead with Nicole’s plan to kill her husband Michel so that they can live in peace. She wants both her and Nicole to live without any more abuse. Sisterhood is therefore, a very strong bond between women and it is this bond that has led to the acts committed in the three novels.
