Social skills groups teach people with autism spectrum disorder the techniques to suitably interact with typically established peers. Social skills groups comprise a small group of individuals with disabilities headed by a mentor. The journals discusses the Social skills groups dealing with the people with autism and my own participation in helping people with autism.
Social skills group’s gatherings contain practice, instructions, role play and regular feedback combined with continuous practice to skills for the purpose of developing constructive societal communication with peers. The social skills groups are effective with pre-school, elementary and children in the secondary schools. During the training, social skills groups target developing the social competence, friendship skills, communication and conversation skills and problem solving. Also, interaction skills like initiating a conversation, responding to a conversation, complimenting and accepting compliments, sharing and asking for others are also part of training. Social skills groups training takes place in different schools and health clinics. In my personal capacity, I am part of the social skills group for autism and I regular participate in their meetings and impart training to the children with autistic disorder. I teach them the communication skills and basics of greetings.
Stereotypes associated with autism stands true only to the extent of movies and media representations. People with autism spectrum disorder have the abilities much lower in grade as compared to the normal people. Possessing of special abilities and special talent is not a matter of fact. The media images have greatly affected the image of autism due to the exaggerations about the abilities of the people with autism spectrum disorder. There is a difference between what a clinic reality is and what is projected.
