“To say that one waits a lifetime for his soul mate to come around is a paradox. People eventually get sick of waiting, take a chance on someone, and by the art of commitment become soul mates, which takes a lifetime to perfect, ” said Criss Jami in Venus in Arms. To say that I had waited for my soul mate for a lifetime would be a falsehood; it would be closer to the truth to say that he was always loitering in my thoughts, though I knew not who he might be.
I was a sophomore student in my medical college. One day a young man, curly haired, dark and tall walked up to me and said, “Hi”. Believe me, he didn’t look anything like Prince Charming. I looked at him in surprise because a postgraduate medical student doesn’t often talk to a sophomore. His next words surprised me even more. He said, “I heard you met my cousin during the holidays.” I had just returned from my summer break. I nodded my head in agreement, a little of my surprise vanishing at this conventional opening. His next words were, “My cousin might have told you that I want to marry you. So will you marry me?”
The tree we were standing under suddenly seemed taller and I felt small and insignificant. I wondered what had hit me. It took me two minutes to realize that I had just been proposed to. Here I was all of 19 years and someone actually wanted to marry me. My instinct was to run away from him but his familiarity with my family required that I answer his question. Quite frankly, I told him, “No”. He told me, “ Sorry”, and walked away.
At the back of my mind, this incident rankled because though our nature of work deemed that we see each other sometimes, we didn’t talk. My dreams of my soul mate continued but I could not place a face to my dream mate. During one instance, we passed one another outside the cardiothoracic surgery ward. I decided to smile at him and let bygones be bygones. He nodded his head at me pleasantly, and I thought he had gotten over my negative reply. A couple of months’ later, I left the institution and returned home to work in a mission hospital. I lived alone in a room provided by the hospital.
It was my 23rd birthday that day and a Friday. I had come home for the weekend. My father was surprisingly not at home. Was there a trace of embarrassment on her face? My mother told me that my father had had to travel to a neighboring town for work. She seemed evasive with her replies.
It was 8 p.m., when Father returned. An unfathomable look passed between him and my mother. The air in the room suddenly seemed cooler. His favorite daughter was home for her birthday and I had just a cool “Happy Birthday” from him?
I soon came to know why. He called me to his room and Mom was with him. Abruptly he said, “Remember the boy who proposed to you two years back; the one you rejected?” I nodded my head, wondering what was coming. He continued, “Well, I am returning from his house”. In surprise, I asked him, “Why did you go there?” He said, ‘because, they invited me home. I had replied to a matrimonial advertisement that I found suitable for you and it turned out, coincidentally that it was this very boy, who had advertised. “Shocked, I sat down on a chair. What had fate in store for me? Was every thing in the universe conspiring against me? How could I marry the very same boy I had rejected once? My parents were watching my face for my reaction. I said, “ I can’t marry him. I have rejected him once. How can I accept him now?’ My parents tried to reason with me, saying he was a well-educated and cultured guy, who came from a distinguished, old family of our community. He told me that the boy’s family would be coming to meet me within a week and requested me to come home to meet his family that day. I have never disobeyed or disappointed my father. With a heavy heart, I agreed to meet the family.
A few days’ later, I met him along with his family. It was the first time that we came face to face after that embarrassing incident. He was very cool and collected for someone who had been rejected. He had kind eyes but the very same curly hair, I had noted on our first meeting. We got to know each other a little better during the few minutes we had to talk to one another privately. I remember thinking; perhaps I had been hasty in judging him previously. Maybe he really loved me.
A few days later, our families mutually consented and fixed our marriage. A week after our engagement, my fiancé came to visit me at my hospital. I was excited to take him to my room. He held my hand and looking at my engagement ring, asked,” Do you like the ring? Does it fit you?” I shyly nodded. He spent a few hours with me and we had coffee together at the small teashop near my room. Three weeks into our engagement, we were married. It is now 21 years since that fateful day. The act of commitment we made by taking a chance all those years’ ago has truly paid off. We have grown to love each other so much that we cannot bear to spend a day apart. We have truly become soul mates.
