Mayo clinic is a non-profit making medical practice and research group in the medical field situated in Rochester, Minnesota. It is mainly known of extending exclusive medical services to its customers, as well as equipping the world with knowledge on factors concerning various medical problems. The success of the organization is mainly driven by existence of a strategic plan as the driving force. This is anchored by leveled development plans and proper understanding of competition in the industry. The organization is highly dependent on directional strategies, implementation of strategic alternatives, as well as appropriate application of value-added services to patients.
Like any large organization, Mayo clinic highly depends on the development of long-term and short-term organizational plans. These are supposed to be a map towards the great future of the organization in the future. The main long term plan for the organization is to be the best organization in the delivery of medical services to the public, in future. The organization aimed at this through development of exclusive plans on how to acquire adequate facilities. This would be done through partnership with the willing financiers who would provide capital that would be used in developing necessary infrastructure for the organization (Ross, 2014). The other long-term plan for the company is to acquire extensively large facilities that would function as a pillar for the success of the organization. These are facilities that would help in accommodating patients as well as relatives in the process of treating an individual. This requires massive investment on construction by the company as it seeks to expand on medical facilities such as the nursing rooms and wards for patients (Health & Beauty Close-Up, 2013). This will enable the organization to treat the targeted number of patients. The other long term goal that the organization would wish to chase is coming up with satellite clinic for Mayo. This means that the services that are offered at Mayo clinic would be extended to other areas, which would be closer to patients. This means that Mayo clinic will be able to reach its mission of ensuring delivery of quality services to patients.
On the other hand, the organization has been committed to its short term organizational plans. These are daily activities that would have been helpful to the organization in a bid to achieve excellence. Mayo clinic has a short-term plan of ensuring excellent treatment for all patients who visit the facility. It aims at ensuring that every patient who comes to the organization has extensive benefits of proper treatment from the facility. Also, in the short-term plan the organization intends to undertake all the consultation and treatment plans brought in by patients (Ross, 2014). This means that the organization intends to scrap the issue of referral, which is paramount in making the organization relevant in the society. Since the clinic is usually visited by patients who may not afford expensive medication from big hospitals, there is adequate need for the clinic to look for donors who would facilitate medication in the clinic. This has been a major short term goal for the organization and can be achieved following the extensive effort that the management is trying to employ towards the projects of the health facility.
The strategic plan is made relevant by existence of strategies for various levels. At the corporate level, the most evident strategy is the existence of a map work towards the achievement of the projects of the organization. The organization also has the structural plan of the facility that should be developed to suit the needs of the organization. The organization also has a plan to the number of patients that it intends to be served. The number of patients influences the level of activities that would be undertaken by the clinic in the bid to enhance health for the people in need of health. Corporate plan has the detailed roles of different departments that are supposed to be undertaken to make departments relevant to the organization. Divisional level defines presence of departmental goals, which are supposed to facilitate excellence of corporate level plans. For Mayo clinic, divisional level houses plan such as fast services in all departments. There should be minimal waiting for patients in queues as they wait for treatment. The organization has divided its plans by departments where any department should be responsible for the extensive growth of a given sector (Health & Beauty Close-Up, 2013). This would lead to the overall growth of the organization.
It is helpful to realize that Mayo Clinic also faces exclusive competition. This is usually healthy for organizations that are willing to extend massive benefit to the clients. Following the extensive success of the clinic, it has been challenged by another major clinic and hospitals in the delivery of high profile medical services. One of the main competitive strategies that organizations have fashioned against Mayo clinic is execution of mega projects. These are projects aimed at development of high profile structures as support facilities to a given clinic. One of the clinics that have been at the forefront to challenge Mayo clinic is the Johns Hopkins clinic. This clinic has exclusively invested on structures that facilitate its excellent performance in the medical field. The clinic has also been strategic as Mayo to ensure that it extends its skills and knowledge to the public through construction of education and medical research centers. In this regard, the clinic has invested heavily to ensure it attracts more students to its medical schools than Mayo clinic. Also, following the continuous fame of the two and other clinics, medical charges have been highly influenced. There has been lack of proportional changes in prices and definition of practices in the industry (Mayo Clinic Research, 2014). However, Mayo has managed to outshine its competitors through development of excellent strategy that helps the organization to have adequate medical preparation to suit excellent performance.
However, Mayo clinic can counter the competition and set the pace in the industry. This would be possible through application of concrete procedures that are meaningful to define excellence. The first strategy would be to ensure maximum performance for every department. There should be clear goals defined for every department and responsible leaders should head the departments. The organization should hire medical practitioners with management skills in their hands. This would help the clinic in ensuring that it extends ample services to its customers, and minimum complains in poor management is received. Management is a skill that is equally fundamental in defining success for an organization (Health & Beauty Close-Up, 2013). Excellent management for the organization means easy counter for competition openings that may haunt the organization.
Following close look at the operations of Mayo Clinic, there are no practices such as mobile clinics. These are meant to be platforms by which the clinic would reach most people in the society. This would be an innovative strategy to ensure the public highly prefers Mayo clinic to its competitors. This innovative idea would mean exclusive business for the clinic. Also, the clinic may invest in seeking knowledge for the most prevalent diseases that the clinic handles. This would device a strategy of attracting more clients to the clinic. Following the increased cases of cancer in the modern world, the organization should invest extensively on facilities that would help in early diagnosis and treatment of such diseases. Also, the company should invest in modern ward facilities that will accommodate a deal of patients with each of them treated accordingly. Such facilities must be well structured to facilitate fast recovery of patients and fast treatment for critically ill patients (Mayo Clinic Research, 2014).
Also, the clinic may counter extensive competition by introducing facilities such as emergency rescue services. Being a major clinic with exclusive facilities, Mayo stands for opportunities to counter competition through exclusive use of services like emergency rescue. Most of the competitors in the sector are not in excellent condition to deal with emergency cases as they arise. There should be a short term plan to equip the clinic with adequate facilities that would help in managing emergency incidences as they arise. There should be a long term goal for the clinic to be the most responsive clinic to emergencies in the future. This means there would have been adequate techniques of countering competition in terms of facilities’ possession.
Strategic plan for Mayo clinic is mandatory and needs to be built on relevance and desire for excellence. It consists of long-term and short-term goals, which may only be achieved through commitment of the relevant bodies. The management of facilities, such as Mayo clinic should be at the forefront in defining strategies for the organization. The facility should consult different people such as patients, medical researchers, and physicians on the best practices that would enhance its performance and counter competition in the health sector.
